Vignettes: Relationship Review Vignette 1 James and Toni talked about their early relationship. Driving through the South, James had to lie down in the back seat while Toni drove. James is Black. Toni is White. When they were married in the early 1960s, the Civil Rights movement was building steam, but discrimination was still prevalent. James described the danger that he and his wife were in, because they were in a mixed marriage. It was forbidden. They both comment that while the culture has made strides in lowering oppression, they still feel the disapproving eyes of strangers and are more comfortable living in places where skin color carries less importance. Now they are facing a new challenge. Their daughter, Skye, is engaged to be married and has come home to do some wedding planning. But James and Toni are worried for her. She is marrying her soul mate, and the couple are very happy. James and Toni are not worried about the couple’s compatibility. Her fiancée has a good job, they share the same religious beliefs, have similar interests, and treat each other well. They are anxious to be parents and James and Toni are sure they’ll be good parents. Skye’s partner, Susan, hasn’t told her family about Skye yet. She does not know whether her family will accept Skye. Susan’s family is from Georgia, and although Skye is light-skinned she is obviously of color. James wonders what will be the bigger issue for Skye, the color of her skin, or her gender. He wonders whether the therapist can predict the unique challenges that his daughter’s family will experience. Vignette 2 The Gomez family is a proud family in good standing with the Catholic Church. They are proud of their son Carlito, and want him to grow to be active in the church. They are afraid that they are seeing behaviors from Carlito that frighten them. Since he was young, he wasn’t like the other boys. His interests were different. Now that he is entering puberty, he does not seem to be interested in the girls they think he should like. In Carlos’s family, he heard of his dad’s brother never getting married, and there were rumors that his roommate was more than a friend, but no one ever talked about them as a couple. Carlos wants to turn his son into a normal boy. He was told that a family therapist could help him. Vignette 3 Barbara was assigned a couple that she does not know how to work with. Both members of the couple are women, but to Barbara’s surprise, she can’t tell who is the “male” and who is the “female.” She began consulting with Derrick, who is seeing his first gay male couple, and surprisingly has the same problem. They can’t find their supervisor so they came to you. They need you to help them understand the typologies of gay and lesbian couples. They are asking you whether all gay and lesbian couples follow the heterosexual norms of one “male” and one “female” set of behaviors. Please describe gay and lesbian couples as you understand them from your reading. © 2017. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved.
