Government’s Role in Internet
Background
The internet originated in the 1970s as a part of the Advanced Research Project Agency
(ARPA), which was controlled by the government to understand the working of the internet.
From its origin, the internet was started as a government project, and since the beginning, the
internet has grown into a major component of network infrastructure. At this time, there was a lot
of interest in commercial packet network services, and by mid-1970, there were several networks
available of public use (Tews, 2019). There was an ability to communicate among the different
networks, and that assisted in the creation of a single communication system.
At the time of origin of the internet, no personal computers existed, and therefore
communication was done among large scale scientific time-sharing systems. Since the project of
the internet was supported by the government, and there was no extra funding to make complex
systems, internet connection revolved mainly around gateways to connect different networks
(Tews, 2019). Additionally, TCP/IP software, which allowed internetworking, was developed in
the computers to enable free and multiple network connections.
Current issues
The internet currently links millions of machines and tens of millions of users all over the
world. Very little of the internet is currently owned or operated by the government or any
government bodies. The internet is becoming the main aspect of economic life; new industries
are built, and many other originally existing industries are finding new ways to operate. Internet
is also a threat to the economy such that traditional organizations are finding it hard to function
in the world where the internet is widely spread. The internet s not only used by businesses
