DB1: Discuss and differentiate the pharmacological treatments used for dementia. Are
there any contraindications?
There are various pharmacological treatments used for dementia, which may have
differences in terms of their effectiveness. Firstly, Sulphomucopolysaccharides drugs are
statistically majorly used in the treatment of dementia compared to CDP‐choline. It is because
they improve the behavior of patients who experience mild to moderate dementia symptoms.
Secondly, Donepezil has higher efficacy rates compared to vitamin E due to its highly effective
rate in improving the genera cognitive function of patients (Santaguida, Raina, Booker,
Patterson, Baldassarre, Cowan, & Unsal, 2019). The other set of pharmacological drugs to treat
dementia includes antagonistic stress, which had a significant difference in its treatment efficacy
due to better cognition, unlike nicergoline. Also, antagonism pressure is even more effective in
improving perception in a dementia patient compared to meclofenamate.
On the other hand, Posatirelin is preferred to citicoline since it not only enhance
cognition in dementia patients but also stabilizes their mood. Some practitioners used Pyritinol as
a pharmacological agent to treat moderate dementia, unlike its relative drug hydergine, which
had lower efficacy rates in treating the condition. Lastly, practitioners had mixed reactions on
Idebenone versus tacrine since they saw no difference in their treatment effectiveness
(Santaguida, Raina, Booker, Patterson, Baldassarre, Cowan, & Unsal, 2019). However, among
the above drugs, none of them pose any contraindications to patients with dementia, although
benzodiazepine is not recommendable in treating dementia since it increases the risk of
worsening the condition, especially in older patients.
Discuss pharmacological treatments used for Autism Spectrum Disorder. What are the
target symptoms?
DISCUSSION BOARD QUESTIONS
3
The various pharmacological treatments used for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are
prescribed based on the target symptoms of the patient. The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has approved Risperidone as an appropriate drug to treat ASD for patients with irritability
target symptoms. Also, aripiprazole has been approved as a medication for Autism Spectrum
Disorder most suitable for patients who display acts of aggression (Goldstein & Ozonoff, 2018).
Paliperidone was also another pharmacological agent used in treating irritability, hyperactivity,
and aggression among patients with ASD. Another medication recommended by doctors is
Quetiapine, which showed significant improvement in sleep disturbances and aggression
behavior, especially for children with ASD.
On the other hand, equivocal data support the use of Olanzapine in treating Autism
Spectrum Disorder among children. There is historical evidence of effectiveness in using
Ziprasidone as a pharmacological agent to treat ASD among patients with high irritability and
self-injurious behaviors. Naltrexone is a potential drug used in treating disorders such as Autism
Spectrum Disorder in youth patents who portray self-injury behaviors. Also, it improves
hyperactivity and irritability in children who have ASD, and it is a well-tole...
