Final  Project     Psychology COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify basic research methods and ethical considerations in the study of behavior 2. Distinguish between selected theoretical orientations, processes, and concepts of behavior 3. Articulate the major principles of the main fields of Psychology 4. Evaluate the credibility of psychological research 5. Apply knowledge of human behavior and development to real-world scenarios CASE DESCRIPTION (BACKGROUND INFORMATION) There are many factors that influence the perspective, behavior, and actions of individuals. You have learned about biological influences, social influences, developmental influences, and environmental influences. You have also learned how theories and research are important in understanding human behavior. One of the best ways to follow the path of an individual’s behavior is to read a biography about that person. For this project, you will be the “investigating researcher” who will explain the behavioral path of an individual you find interesting. This will include using the psychology theories you have learned to explain the many influences involved with guiding individual’s life, and outcome benchmarks of the person’s life. Additionally, as a good researcher would do, this project will include a section on ethical concerns of limitations and biases. This aspect reaches back to research and the types of research used in an investigation. You may have read a biography in the past that you can reference, or you can find short biographies online depicting the life of the person selected for this project. There are many famous historical biographies, but this project is not limited to fame. There are interesting artists, dancers, musicians, community leaders, everyday heroes, military soldiers etc. Find a person that you want to investigate as your case study. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS Choose a person with a published biography and compile an 8-10 page case study investigation, presented in the following manor: Part 1: Summary of Chronological Biography and Influence (Approximately 1-2 pages in length) © 2015. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without express written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. Final  Project     Psychology This section will include: Introduction: 1 to 2 paragraphs in length that includes the thesis statement or hook, introduces the biographical person, introduces the three selected theories and informs the reader that limitations, biases and ethical concerns will be addressed. Hook/thesis statement example: Running a marathon is no easy feat, many people would never dream of taking on such a task, but for Sammy Wanjiru running is a way of life. Great runners are not born running, so what makes them become champion runners? Biography focus example: If your selected subject was George Washington, the main focus of your summary could be on his being the first president of the United States and the life events that ultimately shaped him into that person. The chronological account gives a vivid picture of developmental influences that include: society at the time, family dynamic, gender expectations, environment, parents, siblings etc. Part 2: Summary of Theoretical Perspectives (Approximately 2-3 pages in length) In this section you will select three major theories within the field of psychology and provide a brief overview of each theory. You will also need to relate and give at least three specific examples for each theory of behaviors or actions demonstrated within the biography that motivated the person’s behaviors or actions. Example: Using the example of George Washington, you might elect to view this story through the lens of evolutionary psychology and you might draw conclusions about the role that ancestry played in his ascension to the presidency; motivated by genetics and survival of the fittest. Another example might be to relate behaviorism (rewards vs, avoid punishment) and the motivation of the actions to win in the new country, or avoid being defeated. Examples of major psychology theories: • Biological • Evolutionary • Psychoanalytic • Behaviorism • Cognitive • Humanistic and existential • Sociocultural • Socio-emotional development • Moral Development Part 3: Theories and Behavior Outcomes (Approximately 1-2 pages in length) © 2015. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without express written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. Final  Project     Psychology In this section, relate the same three psychology theories you selected to outcomes of the behaviors and actions revealed from the biography. This will include the relevant information regarding the theory and predictions of behavior based on the theory, and include at least three examples from the biography. For each theoretical perspective, provide three key points of the theoretical perspective to support the application of the theory to the life events. Make sure your three key points are clear and accurate. Example: Here students will articulate how the relevant principles, processes, and concepts of behavior from evolutionary psychology explain the outcome of George Washington’s life. This might include the motivation of carrying on genetic lines, adaptation and being able to adapt to new environments etc. Part 4: Criticism of biases and ethical (approximately 1-2 pages in length) In this section, students will provide a critical review of the construction of the biography and the use of biographies as evidence or documented data. This includes considerations of any research limitations, biases, or ethical problems that might be present in the biography, or with the use of biographies as fact or information. Biases can include the perspective of who wrote the biography, historical influences, missing data, etc. Limitations can include a comparison of qualitative vs. quantitative types of research, with reference to a biography being a qualitative type of documentation. This section will also include examples from the biography. Example: In our example of George Washington, you may want to focus on the possible biases of the author of a biography on this figure who occupies such a primary role in the history of a nation. You might address the “mythological” proportions such a figure has taken in the culture of the author of the biography and how that could impact the way that George Washington’s life was presented in the biography. Part 5- Conclusion (approximately 1-2 pages in length) The conclusion should synthesize the material and should be a restatement of the thesis, a summary of the sections discussed and the findings, and a statement of findings that reflect what the students learned about biographies, theories and influences on behavior and ethical concerns (biases and limitations) of investigating a person through information attained form a biography. End with a “pow”, the conclusion should leave the reader with a feeling of how the writer feels about the investigation of the biography. A concluding statement should link to the hook of thesis statement in the introduction. This project is to be written in APA format and should be 8-10 pages in length. This does not include the reference page or a title page should you construct one; tittle page is not required. © 2015. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without express written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. Final  Project     Psychology This paper should include a minimum of 5 references, use APA in-text citing for all references, and include a properly formatted reference page. The in-text citing should match the reference page. If you need APA guidance these sites will help you: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx PROJECT SUBMISSION 1. A title page and abstract is not required for project submissions. Because evaluators do not see student names when reviewing student work, it is important that students not include any personal identifiers in their project submissions. 2. Save your document as a PDF file. In Microsoft Word, you can use the Save As option to select PDF as your file format. 3. If your project requires a video, you should post the video to a free video hosting site like www.youtube.com, www.photobucket.com, or one of the other free webhosting websites. The following website maintains a list of video hosting sites; http://www.videohostings.com/. In the written materials that you submit as part of the assignment, you should include the title of the video and a link for the faculty member to use to grade your submission. 4. Upload the PDF file in your course. 5. Your assignment will not be returned to you, so keep a copy for your files. © 2015. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without express written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. ...
