But another historical challenge from within the research community has been contending with inclusion. Sexologist and sex educator, Bianca Laureano, a black Puerto Rican who identifies as a polyamorous femme woman, recalls being at a conference for sex educators numbering over 500 attendees, nearly all of whom were white. But she met a few attendees of color and, with a swimming pool as a catalyst, founded the of the Women of Color Sexual Health Network (WOCSHN). The organization is dedicated to creating “opportunities for inclusion and retention of people of color—with a focus on women and gender expansive people of color—in the fields of sexuality, sexual science, and sexology and challenges the white supremacy these fields were built upon.” Bianca received her Bachelor’s in New York University in Women’s Health and Latino Communities and her Master of Arts in Human Sexuality in Education. She emphasizes that exploring one’s sexuality and choosing what we want to do with our bodies is a human right. Sex education provides information about our bodies, the mechanics, and biology, but importantly, it establishes ethical conditions, such as consent. She really wants to provide sexual education to the young people because withholding the information from them won’t benefit anyone since they are the ones who can create change. She is currently working at an organization called Scenarios USA. She now creates educational films about sexual orientation among different ethnicities and sexual decision-making and unintended pregnancies. 1) Here is a blog to find out more information regarding Bianca: https://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/news/a38831/why-we-need-more-nonwhite-sex-ed-teachers/ 2) Click on this link to read an interview between Bianca and the (AASECT) American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists: http://www.scarleteen.com/blog/al/sexuality_in_color_an_interview_with_bianca_laureano_extended Instructions for Written Assignment: After reviewing these resources, write a 250 word or more reflection with your responses TO BE SUBMITTED TO iLEARN, which addresses ideas related to the following questions: 1) What was most interesting to you in reviewing these resources? 2) What did you learn from these resources about why it is important to have a variety of ethnic sex educators? 3) What do these resources tell you about the types of people that do science? 4) What new questions do you have after reviewing these resources? My name is Jocelyn Ortiz, most people I know call me Jojo. I am Mexican-American from the East Bay, in a city called Antioch. I am a fourth-year majoring in General Biology and, if all goes well, hopefully graduating spring 2019. After graduating from San Francisco State, I want to go to medical school where I can be on my way to becoming an OB-GYNan Obstetrician Gynecologist.
