Communication barriers include all contributing psychosocial, cognitive, and
even physical elements in an organizational environment that hinder and prevent effective
relaying, receiving and understanding of messages sent via communication channels.
Communication is one of the most important aspects of organizational culture and management
since it affects how information is shared within the organization. It affects how conflicts are
solved, decision making, instruction, leadership as well as decision making. The psychosocial
aspects of communication affect perception and attitudes, which have direct implications on
aspects such as motivation. It is, therefore, very important for organizations and leaders to have a
firm understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship of the factors that affect communication,
more so communication barriers, and the mitigation strategies regarding the same.
The Factors that Cause Communication Barriers in Organizations
As already stated, a majority of the barriers to communication are cognitive and
psychosocial. Although communication hindrance may be experienced in generic
communication such as briefings and the like, intense barring of communication takes place at
the interpersonal level. Some of the interpersonal factors that cause communication barriers
include use of overcomplicated words or terminologies (jargon), use of slang, an apparent lack of
attention or interest, distractions on the part of the receiver, differences in viewpoint and
perception, emotional and cultural barriers (taboos and intolerance), language differences and
physical barriers such as speech difficulties and hearing problems (Abdin, 2008).
It is also important to note that detecting these barriers is relatively easy.
Conflicts, irritability, negative tone in speech, and other non-verbal cues are one of the easiest

ways to subtly detect the existence of such barriers, apart from verbal cues that may not

Communication Methods and Strategies That Help To Mitigate the Effects of

There are several approaches used to mitigate and otherwise limit the potentially
negative consequences of barring communication. One strategy is to limit the quantity of
