04A.Project Questionnaire Assignment

Instructions

Copy and paste the questions below into the "text submission" window, then answer the questions to select your project topic. Note that this topic you select and I approve is the topic for your proposal and semester project. Be sure to read the 04a.Project Introduction lesson first, and then review the sample projects. Then answer these questions. Note that I must approve this topic before you may begin your proposal assignment.

If you have several topics you are considering, submit all of them in one upload. I will then give feedback on which may be the best choice.

Grading

If I approve your topic, you will receive a 100. Please read my comments in the grading feedback area. Note that any comments I give you regarding your project become a part of your project requirements. If I do not approve your project topic, the project will receive a temporary grade of 50/100. I will give specific reasons why this project topic needs to be adjusted within the grading comments area. You may then revise your topic/project answers and resubmit, and I will regrade. The goal is for everyone's topic to be approved and to make a 100.

When I request adjustments or do not approve a project topic, it is based on years of guiding students through the project assignment. The goal is for everyone to select a topic that is manageable within the time limitations of the semester, enjoyable, and a good fit for their writing style and topic-related experience.

04A: Project Introduction This semester, you will devote a large portion of your course work and your grade to the semester project. We will also complete several assignments that correspond with your project, such as a proposal as well as the progress report. Information about topics, related assignments, and requirements for the project are below. Topics For your project, you will be writing a document (such as a manual or guide) that addresses a specific problem by a specific group of people. It must be non-academic writing; in other words, it cannot be a long essay with headings. You choose your own topic, ranging from a work-related manual to instructions for your favorite hobby. Previous technical writing students have written documents like these: ● an employee instruction manual (also called Standard Operating Procedures [SOP], training manual, protocols, etc.), detailing your job procedures, such as a: ○ Trainer's guide for Don Pablo's restaurant waitstaff ○ Tax Preparer's guide for Alcon ● an "everything you ever wanted to know about" guide to ○ Collecting antique teddy bears ○ Beginning the study of geology ○ Collecting comic books ● a software manual, personalizing it for particular users ● an employee handbook containing policies for a particular company where you are employed, such as ○ Sam's ○ IHOP ● a set of instructions for a specified task for a specified group ● extended instructions for a hobby or special interest, such as ○ All You Need to Know to Buy and Restore Antique Corvettes ○ Making a Stained Glass Project ○ Completing Annual Motorcycle Maintenance You may not use an existing document--including Internet pages--in any way. This assignment must be a document you compose. If any student turns in a previously written document for any of the project-related assignments (including the project itself), the grade will be 0 for the project and any of its related assignments. If you need to do some research from the Internet or another electronic or printed source, please let me know immediately. Your project must be written by you; it cannot be a compilation of information from the Internet or other sources. All information borrowed from other sources must be documented with endnotes English 2311/Technical Writing, 04a.Project Introduction 1/3 and a works cited/ bibliography page. If the project does not meet these standards, it will not pass. The Forbidden Topic You may not write a manual on planning a wedding or a cookbook. Project Requirements Your project must meet these requirements: ● contain at least 10 pages of text you compose, excluding all front and end matter, visual aids, and divider pages ● have 2,500 words minimum, 5,000 words maximum ● address a specific problem or situation experienced by a particular and actual group of people (not a hypothetical audience, such as a business you will start in a few years) The Benefits Most students find completing a technical writing project extremely rewarding. It is an empowering experience from which you will benefit throughout your professional career. The skills you will master in organization, time management, word processing, collaboration, writing and page design will add depth and detail to your résumé. It will give you a writing portfolio to take on job interviews. If previous students could give you one word of advice, they would tell you to start early. Remember that this project is one you and I work on together. When you first read about the project, you may be intimidated; however, please remember that most tech writing students feel intimidated at first but find they can complete a professional-quality document of which they are quite proud. Sample Projects If you would like to see a sample project, see the multiple “sample” files contained in this lesson. I also have samples in my office you are welcome to stop by and peruse during my office hours. You can also request that I put additional samples in any of the campus libraries on reserve for you. If you want to see some, just let me know. Due Date for Project See your assignments list for your project due date, usually during the 13th week of the fall and spring semesters and the 4th week of the summer semesters. English 2311/Technical Writing, 04a.Project Introduction 2/3 I accept late projects but count off 10 points per day. You may not revise your project to raise your grade. While you're working on the project, please stay in contact with me so that your project can progress smoothly and successfully. Communication with Your Instructor I encourage you to begin your project immediately after I approve your topic. I also encourage you to maintain contact with me throughout its completion. I am here to answer technical writing questions, give computer assistance, and provide feedback. I will conduct or arrange for computer workshops--if requested--during the semester to help you complete the project. I would also be glad to meet with you in my office to discuss the project. Please email me with any questions or problems at any stage of the process. Assignment Your assignment now is to complete the "04a.Questionnaire." ● It will ask several questions about your project topic. ● Your grade will remain "0" until I manually read your answers, approve your topic, and insert the grade. ● I will read your answers and let you know that I either approve or reject your topic, or I may ask you for more information. Questions Please ask if you have any questions about this project introduction or about project topics. Many people can't think of a project topic for the first few minutes or hours, but afterward they usually come up with several good options.
