In this article, Williams (2019) notes that up to 64 million social security beneficiaries
will experience a 1.6% Cost of living adjustment (COLA) as reported by the Social Security
Administration (SSA) from January 2020. This raise will be highly dependent on the state from
which an individual originates. The 10 states with the highest average payouts for their
beneficiaries from 2017 include New Jersey with an average payout of $1,553.63, Connecticut at
$1,546.67, Delaware: $1,517.11, New Hampshire: $1,498.01, Michigan: $1,493.77,
Maryland: $1,482.87, Washington: $1,472.50, Indiana: $1,464.61, New York: $1,458.19 and
