Hard of Hearing People

Abstract
Hard of hearing is a term used to describe individuals who have a mild to moderate loss
of hearing, have adequate residual hearing, and a hearing aid may assist their speech, their
communication can be by sign language, verbal language or both of them. Hard of hearing
people cannot be said to be deaf as deaf people have a complete loss of hearing, and they may
have very little or no hearing ability at all (Joseph, 2019). This paper seeks to address situations
of hard of hearing people in significant periods in history, the political, social and religious
perspectives on the rights of hard of hearing people in the past and in the present. It also
addresses the failures or improvements made in the struggle for hard of hearing people to gain
respect and recognition.

The church was the principal authority in stating that hard of hearing people were dumb and thus
were not allowed the right to be educated. The religious leaders believed that hard of hearing
people get their condition from God. The religious leaders in Greek times were the ones who
promoted discrimination against people with hard of hearing as they made it feel like they were
to be avoided, by calling the condition punishment and a curse. The parents of the people with
the impairment were said to have committed some sin that made God angry, punishing them by
