The Oedipus Rex of Sophocles starts as Apollo's priest requests King Oedipus of Thebes
to assist in stopping the calamity that ravages the region. Oedipus says in his reply that he has told
his brother-in-law, Creon, to get advice on the matter together with Apollo's oracle at Delphi.
Creon returns with the message that the person who killed Laius, the former king of Thebes, has
to be found and justice to be done in order to stop the plague. The murderer still remains in the
area, according to the oracle. Oedipus, who came to Thebes after the death of Laius, asks Creon
for the specifics of the assassination.

Creon states that while on his way to finding an oracle, Laius was killed by robbers.
Oedipus vows to get even with the killer and puts a stop to the calamity befalling them. Oedipus
requests the blind prophet Teiresias to find the assassin. When Oedipus was questioned about the
murderer's identity, Teiresias does not understand. Teiresias laments that the truth brings nothing
except misery; there is no need for finding the truth. But when Oedipus stands up against Teiresias
and says that he is the one who killed, Teiresias violently admits that Laius was assassinated by
Oedipus himself. Oedipus assumes that Teiresias wants to take the throne away from him on behalf
of Creon, and rebukes the prophet angrily.
