Birds and Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred was considered to be the best director of horror films because of how he deployed the use
of cinematography in most of his movies. In the opening of the Birds film Alfred Hitchcock, the
birds are slowly pecked away by the passing crows. He uses the bright light and medium shots as
a technique of cinematography in the introductory parts of the film to create a mysterious tone for
the audience. In these two films, he uses cinematography methods to generate suspense by not
giving away much information in many scenes to the viewers. This technique helped him to keep
many viewers at the edge of their seats. Hitchcock uses various cinematography techniques in the
opening stages of these two films to create a shock factor (Misek, 2016).
In contrast to what the society expects, Hitchcock, in his psycho film, uses groundbreaking and
terrifying images, as illustrated by the shower scene. This technique, which presents the pictures
of their nudity and graphic brutality, causes the viewers to scream. In relation, the Birds by
Hitchcock entails shocking factors, as illustrated when Jessica Tandy pays a visit to a friend only
to find all her eyes pecked out with blood all over the floor. These two movies are clear evidence
of Hitchcock's use of cinematography throughout his films (Misek, 2016).
The beauty and attractiveness of films depend on the camera angle. In instances where there is no
soundtrack, the director uses the technique of the camera to create suspense. He uses
cinematography to create fear and tension in the films. Through the use of camera angles, the terror
attack by the birds is portrayed in a clear view despite the lack of graphical features in the movie,
as illustrated in the Melanie phone booth scene where the cameras are moved around from the
birds. The camera angle then switches to Melanie's point of view.
