Introduction
Pollution is the introduction of a substance that has the potential to cause harm, into
the environment, resulting in changes that are harmful to the ecosystem. Environmental
pollution has risen dramatically and continues to rise due to urbanization and
industrialization. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is a significant
form of pollution in urban centers. The primary source of pollutants is usually fumes from
industries and vehicles.
Hangzhou City is a significant tourist destination in China. It is also a highly
industrialized city in China. Pollution in the city has been shown to cause health problems to
its residents and also resulted in environmental changes that have negatively affected the
economy of China. This paper shows the different ecological issues experienced in the city,
the consequences of these issues, and how the government of Hangzhou and China are
working on taming pollution in the city.
Thesis statement
Hangzhou City is a great city. However, it has different environmental issues that
pose as a major point of concern and require solutions that can help solve them and keep the
city growing.
Background information on Hangzhou City
Hangzhou City is the capital of the Zhejiang Province of China. It is one of the
prominent cities of China, which is located at the southern terminus of the Grand Canal
waterway. Its strategic location makes it one of the main tourist destinations in China. It is
situated at the northern bank of the Qiantang River estuary at the head of Hangzhou Bay,
with a range of hills and Tianmu (eye of God) mountains standing on the western side of the
city. It is also located on the shores of the West Lake, which is highly celebrated in history

and poetry by people like Su Dongpo, a poet who described the lake as a beautiful and
romantic place, that adds to the charm of the city. Hangzhou is one of the biggest
