Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his
came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all
kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were
before you.” (Matthew 5:1–12)
Sincerely Motivated Faith and Works
“You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and
whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that every one
who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his
brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be
liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there
remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there
before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come
and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:21–4)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust
consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where
thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19–21)
Healing the Blind
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying
aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When he entered the house,
the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I
am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their
eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes
