Sociology matters because it raises your awareness of cultural patterns you would otherwise take for granted.

Sociology defines culture as behaviors, beliefs, arts, habits, and morals in society
(Yinger, 1960). They include but not limited to things such as gender roles, religion, language,
and ideologies. Examples of cultures include popular culture and high culture. Popular culture
refers to the consumption patterns, beliefs, mannerism pleasures, and tastes associated with
mainstream society. High culture, on the other hand, refers to the consumption patterns related to
the wealthy and high-class section of the society. High culture is associated with intellectualism,
political power, and prestige. Yinger (1960), defines subculture cultural clusters within a broader
culture where the people have uniqueness but still in the greater culture.
