Increased Suicide amongst Police Officers
Student’s Name
Institutional Affiliation

This paper discusses the prevalence of suicide among police officers. It starts with an
introduction revealing data on police suicides against the general population. The document then
discusses the reasons for the increasing trend noticed in suicidal cases amongst the law enforcers.
The three most critical factors discussed include alcoholism, depression, and divorce. Some
instances also report negligence as a significant cause. The next part entails the possible
mitigation measures, which include an acknowledgment that the problem exists before
implementing measures like setting up therapeutic departments, organizing training sessions and
seminars, and improving their relationships with civilians. The paper then concludes by
summarizing the points presented throughout the discussing before affirming that reducing the
cases of suicide requires a collective effort from all relevant parties, including the general public.

Police officers are among the most significant members of society owing to the critical
role of maintaining law and order that they play when executing their professional mandates. The
normalcy in society always appears as a usual occurrence with most citizens not knowing the
behind the scenes measures that police officers place to ensure those conditions. As a result,
most people fail to notice the day-to-day challenges that the officers experience, some of which
are always prevalent amongst the civilians. According to Krieger et al. (2015), the most
commonly known cause of death in the United States regards succumbing in the line of duty.
That is, most Americans perceive that most police officers die primarily during violent
confrontations with criminals, some of which usually involve shootouts while others are
unprecedented attacks on the police. However, more saddening data from several researchers
have revealed that the cases of suicide amongst the police officers have been increasing at an
alarming rate, and have already overtaken the deaths that officers suffer in their lines of duty.
In 2018, the nonprofit Blue HELP organization in the United States researched and
realized that more than 160 police officers had committed suicide in 2018 alone, with the number
having increased for three subsequent years. A comparison of this data with another study
conducted by the Ruderman Family Foundation in the same year 2018 revealed that this number
of suicides among the police officers is more than triple the number of police officers who die in
their lines of duty (Heyman, Dill, & Douglas, 2018). That is, those who die from direct assault or
confrontations with criminals and other enemies. This situation calls for dire interventions for
police officers since it is now emerging that they are their worst enemies, with some even
starting to consider suicide as a line of duty.

The severity of the suicide cases among the police officers is further stressed by the
overall data that was released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2018,
the CDC reported through a press release on the study they had conducted that at least 14 people
commit suicide for every 100,000 people in the general population (CDC, 2018). Contrastingly,
the numbers were slightly higher when other scholars researched the prevalence of suicide
among police officers and found that for every 100,000 police officers, 23 of them commit
suicide. These sets of data indicate that the chances of a police officer committing suicide are 1.5
