Law
Week 7 Police Culture & Ethical Role of Police Subculture Research Paper 2

Question Description

I need an explanation for this Law question to help me study.

Research Paper/Term Project: (Due Week 7)

Term Paper:

Each student will be required to complete the term project, which is an 8-12 page APA Style paper. Your paper should have at least 8-12 pages of substance not counting the cover and reference pages. Please be sure that your paper is a Word Document (.doc) uploaded to the assignment section as an attachment. Students will be required to use at least three scholarly - (peer-reviewed)- sources. Students have access to peer-reviewed sources through the APUS library.

Students are required to follow APA Style guidelines.

I will be using the writing rubric to grade all written work during the class. Please make sure that you are using the writing rubric to use as a checklist for all your academic writing in this class and throughout your educational experience at AMU. Research Paper Grading Rubric ~ Click Here

Students must choose from one of the following topics for their paper:

1. The "Blue Wall of Silence" and Police Culture
2. Ethical Decision-Making Process
3. Developing Ethical Leaders
4. The Ethical Role of Police Subculture
5. Ethics vs. Morals
6. Defining Police Ethics
7. Defining Ethical Leadership Practices
8. The Purpose of a Code of Ethics within Police Agencies
9. Police Professionalism and Responsibility

Students should choose one these topics and write about its relevance to police ethics. Be thinking about identifying the major talking points about your topic that are important to review. Critically assess the literature on the subject. I am looking for critical thinking and a clear indication that you have a grasp of the literature.

Do not include quotes in your work. I want to see your critical thinking skills on display and not a string of quotes written by published authors. Your analysis is what is needed for a successful paper. In other words, the peer-reviewed sources used in the paper should be paraphrased, cited in proper APA format and reflect critical thinking.

At this point in your educational journey, you should have solid substance and proper academic formatting in your college-level writing assignments. Students will be graded on both so make sure you turn in your best work.

Do not wait until the last minute to research, write, format, and edit. Proper time management is required to turn in a quality paper that highlights your criminal justice writing.

This a major assignment so follow the instructions carefully.

The Purpose of a Code of Ethics within Police Agencies
Introduction
Ethics is one of the essential requirements in society today, including within the police
agencies. The simplest definition of ethics, according to Dutelle, & Taylor (2017), is a set of
moral or socially acceptable behaviors that govern people’s day-to-day activities or their
behavior. In this case, ethics would mean the set of ethical principles that govern the different
police agencies as they undertake their everyday obligations. Over the years, society has been
experiencing an ever-increasing feud between police officers and the general public. In 2015,
the Washington Post investigated and reported that polices shootings and killing of civilians had
hit a record 385 people within five months. Unfortunately, these statistics seem to be increasing
by the day with increased reports and protests against police brutality.
The emergence of civic groups and movements like #Blacklivesmatter over the recent
past has also introduced a new angle to the unethical behaviors by the police, which keeps
widening the gap between the police and the general public. Further studies have revealed that
most of the police officers involved in such atrocities have usually reported the victims to be
mentally ill. Unfortunately, this number of deaths in the hands of law enforcers is more than
twice the number that the country has recorded in the past decade, with the count of blacks
involved in the deaths being thrice that of whites and other minorities in the nation. Finally,
reports show that 98% of police officers involved in the unwarranted killing of civilians do not
face charges for their crimes, while the 2% that do always end up being set free after justifying
their actions.

On the other hand, the police officers also have in-house challenges that they often need
to face regarding ethical behaviors. For instance, one of the most significant challenge that most
officers face regard silence on their operations and day-to-day pursuit of professional
obligations. The police agencies have sets of rules that they expect their employees to follow to
the letter so that they maintain high standards of operations and also ensure that the latter do not
behave in any way that may jeopardize ongoing investigations or harm the general public.
Despite these clear rules and regulations, some officers still end up breaching them, thus causing
adverse effects to the police agencies.
The reasons mentioned above are among the primary factors that influenced the
development of the code of ethics within police agencies. The police agencies usually have the
code of ethics as separate requirements from their formalized rules and regulations that the
officers also have to follow to the letter. This paper, therefore, discusses the key ethical theories
that influenced the establi...
