University of Rochester Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development ED 524: Survey Design Final Project (6–8 pages) For this final assignment, you will work independently to demonstrate your knowledge on survey design. The project is designed to be an extension of our previous learning activities. You are expected to demonstrate the cumulative skills and techniques that were covered in the lectures, discussions, and text. First, identify a survey in your field/area of interest, as the final project is a thorough critique of an existing survey. Successfully finding a trusted survey for analysis is part of the task. Tip: a Google search using keywords will suffice OR using our library database, browse for quantitative-oriented research articles on your topic and locate the particular survey that was employed by the researcher(s). The paper should be 6–8 pages, double-spaced, APA, and include the following sections: • • • • Introduction (Why did you select this piece? How did you locate it?) Background (Possible topics to include: Survey’s intent? Who are the principal investigators? How was it funded? When was it conducted/designed? Cross-sectional or longitudinal study?) Your overall critique – see the guidelines below Conclusion and implications (How has this survey critique affected your perspective on survey design in your specific area of research? Did it spark new ideas for you?) Critique Guidelines: In your critique, highlight strengths and weaknesses in detail. The following are aspects that you should address: • • • • • • • Question wording (would you recommend changes to the wording due to vagueness or possible misinterpretation/confusion, etc.?) Question format (would you recommend for questions to be presented in a different format? Example: Fill-in-the-blank versus ranking) Directions (would you recommend additional directions or modified directions?) Formality (are there any important components missing?) Survey layout (what recommendations would you make in regards to the questions’ ordering, grouping of items, aesthetics/visual appeal, length, etc.?) Survey administration (if you know whether it was done electronically, mail, or phone – do you think that it was the right choice and why?) Data analysis (what questions or issues do you have about how the data will be analyzed/interpreted?) Additional notes: • Be as specific as possible. For instance, when identifying a problem with the survey, also provide suggestions for improvement (include the actual item and share possible alternatives – constructive feedback means respectfully conveying/explaining the problem and professionally offering advice). • Please include a copy of the survey as part of your project (include a link to the survey in your document or post it in the message box when submitting the final paper). • Use APA when citing sources Due date: Sunday, November 23rd at 11:59pm. Running head: SURVEY DESIGN FINAL PROJECT Survey Design Final Project 1 SURVEY DESIGN FINAL PROJECT 2 Introduction When prompted in class to identify a survey for this project, I searched Google for various instruments related specifically to medical education given my research interest focuses on that topic. At first my search was a little challenging since many results showed surveys that did not seem relevant to medical education, rather they focused on working in the medical field. I decided to alter my search and look at some familiar organizations that oversee the accreditation process for medical schools. Given the large role the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) plays in medical education, I centered my search there. The survey selected for this assignment is the 2016 Medical School Graduation Questionnaire (GQ). This is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) each year. It was first administered in 1978, and is viewed as an important tool for medical schools to use for evaluation purposes, as well as gaining insight into the student experience. My rationale for selecting this survey is that it is administered to all medical students throughout the country, providing institutional insight in comparison to national results. My research interest aims to explore the medical student experience across the four years of medical school, while taking into consideration their perceptions of the level of institution support received specifically when addressing mental health. Since this survey is completed during the final year of medical school, my goal was that it would provide useful information for my future research in this field. Background The data collected in the Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) are used for medical school program evaluation and for research purposes. It is a cross-sectional survey administered each year on February 14th and is open for completion until June 9th. Students have the ability to edit SURVEY DESIGN FINAL PROJECT 3 their responses at any point until June 9th. Survey participation is entirely voluntary and students have the option of skipping questions if desired. Question Wording and Format Questions are separated into broad categories throughout the survey. This provides the opportunity for focus to be placed on certain topics while also delving deeper. The GQ includes questions related to: • Pre-clinical, clinical, and elective experiences • General medical education and readiness for residency • Student services • Experiences of negative behaviors • Financial aid and indebtedness • Career intentions • Strengths of the medical school and areas that need improvement The majority of the questions in the beginning of the survey are presented in a 5-point Likert scale with a neutral option in the middle. Removing the neutral option is encouraged since most questions tend to appear as agree or disagree answers, while also providing a “not applicable” option. If applicable, then the survey would benefit from having respondents choose one response over another rather than choosing in the middle, increasing the likelihood of generating data for further analysis. Some questions throughout the survey appear wordy, and are presented in a manner that can cause the respondent to pause and rethink what is truly being asked. For example, the question on p. 17 asks “Think about HOW OFTEN you experience[d] the following at your medical school” with further instruction that responses should be determined by choosing one of SURVEY DESIGN FINAL PROJECT 4 the categories of frequency provided that best approximates your perceptions. My initial response to this question is confusion as to whether this should be an overall response across the numerous years of medical school, or focus on one particular year. Since experience is labeled as “experience[d]”, one could argue that past and present experiences differ. Of course the timing of this survey could impact the intentionality of making experience past and present tense given students could complete this survey while still in school. However, I also question whether the various possibilities within this response – this year or across all years, past experiences vs. present experiences – take away from the respondent’s likelihood of providing a carefully considered response. Further in the survey, the Likert scale changes to six options, while still inquiring about the respondent’s extent of agreement. This is interesting given the questions previously were addressing agreement as well, however used a 5-point Likert scale with a neutral option. Yet a few questions later the scale shifts to a 6-point Likert scale with the removal of a neutral option. This seems like a strategic survey question given the respondent will have to indicate agreement or disagreement, however it is unclear as to why this was not used throughout the entire survey. A section of the survey that I had particular interest in was the School Administration, Student Affairs, and Student Services topic given this closely relates to the field I work in. The majority of these questions were divided into more specific questions, while using a 5-point Likert scale that offered a neutral option and also provided the option of “did not use”. Shortly following School Administration, Student Affairs, and Student Services questions, the survey then shifts to Behavior Experienced During Medical School that is presented as a table using a 4-point Likert scale. This section has its own unique set of directions provided at the top of the page given the sensitivity of the material. It explains that results will SURVEY DESIGN FINAL PROJECT ...

Survey Design Masters in Education class Critique
Introduction
Today, numerous entities have created a platform for collecting feedback from
the target populations using surveys. The development of reviews is based on
the idea that an entity needs to understand the perceptions held by the target
audiences. Schools and learning institutions also have a way of collecting the

opinions of the target audiences as far as the students and teaching staff is
concerned. Through the evaluation of the methods and techniques used in the
delivery of the ultimate surveys can be a factor in the quality of responses
collected. For instance, using the right tools and methods may help an entity to
gather feedback from the target audiences with limited resistances. On the
same note, it is worth noting that some surveys that fail to observe the best
practices may, in the long run, discourage the participation of the target
audiences.
Sometimes, it is hard for the creators of surveys to identify weaknesses in the
questions that the offer to the audiences. In this context, it is worth noting that
such a review may not help the entity to collect and document the desired
evidence. Therefore, it is an excellent practice to implement the right
mechanisms to promote ef ciency, simplicity, and ease of understanding of the
questions offered.
This project looks at the case of a survey aimed at non-traditional students.
The selection of this survey came from the idea that it falls within the course
taken currently. Further, the study offers a platform for the evaluation of the
practices that are used in the development of questionnaires for collecting
perceptions and feedback from the target audiences. This survey targets nontraditional students who have been enrolled in a program that contains 75% of
traditional learners. Therefore, the survey is aimed at collecting the
perceptions of the non-traditional students about their interactions and
educational needs when it comes to undertaking their program.
The reason for the selection of this survey is also based on the desire to
understand the techniques schools use to evaluate their services and teaching
experiences to diverse populations. Many learning institutions do not subject
their students to such surveys making it hard to collect evidence about their

interactions in their classes and programs. Therefore, this survey bridges the
gap between the non-traditional students and the school administrators as far
as the evaluation of the services offered in the long run is concerned.
Background
The survey in the context targeted non-traditional students in the posteducation setting. The creation of the survey aimed to collect information
about the perceptions that the learners in the post-education setting and fall
under the non-traditional category faced when completing their programs. This
information is essential in the documentation of the potential aws that the
target institution exhibited when it comes to the provision of educational
services to the respective students.
With the survey, it is possible to identify the weaknesses that the learning
institution exhibited — the survey as administered by the management of the
underlying institution. The information about funding for the survey is not
available. The survey was selected from a pool of similar questionnaires on the
internet (Nepequity, n.d.). The survey presents a cross-sectional study which
seeks to collect evidence about the potential implications that the current
educational systems may bring to learners from diverse backgrounds. In this
survey, the questions are concerned about the documentation of the
perceptions that non-traditional ...
