Hairdryers are appliances that are used to accelerate the process of drying the hair.
Also known as blow dryers, handheld hair dryers were invented in the early 1920s (Hinds,
1988). The sections below explain how hair dryers work and their safety.
The Principle
Hairdryers work by accelerating the evaporation of water particles by controlling the
relative humidity of the air surrounding the hair of the user. As you may have learned in your
science class, relative humidity is the amount of moisture held by the air, expressed as a
percentage. In this case, a hairdryer passes air that has low humidity over hair whose
surrounding air contains high levels of humidity. This difference leads to a loss of moisture in
the air surrounding the user’s hair, which then helps in accelerating the drying process.
