Nurse’s Role in Protecting Information
Nurses play a very vital in protecting patient healthcare information. Firstly, nurses
ensure that the practices that have been undertaken in handling the data that belongs to the
patient are compliant with the HIPAA rules and regulation. Secondly, the nurses ensure the
manner that they handle the data that belongs to the patient adheres to the policies that have been
put in place by the healthcare organization (Minority Nurse., 2018). Such policies are put in
place to ensure that the data that belongs to the patient is handled in a better manner. Thirdly, the
nurse is supposed to understand what is protected health information, the manner in which it can
be shared, and the people whom it can be shared with. This will ensure that the protected health
information is kept in a manner that is confidential and hence it will only be used in the process
of delivering treatment to the patient.
Fourthly, the nurse should also take up the role of putting in place reasonable safeguards
that will be used in the process of preventing any accidental exposure of the patients’
information to any party that is not allowed (Masters, 2017). As well, the safeguards will ensure
that there is an avoidance of information disclosure pitfalls...
