Introduction
The course material describes the social factors minority groups face when dealing with
controversial matters and how that affects their lives. Covering the era between the 80s and 90s,
the author explains the different experiences involving the people of color, their health, sexual
life, and quality of interactions. People with disabilities are affected the most as they have more
restrictions when fighting for their rights in highly neglected status. Activists play a significant
role in defending the rights of the minorities who have less representation in social institutions,
to get an equal working ground. The challenges presented in the book are similar to people’s
struggles towards achieving a better future in the harsh economic times experienced today.
Background Information Learnt
Reading through the different segments of the book, I found myself focusing on some
social topics that seem to have the most significant impact on the lives of minorities in history.
The society does not provide equal opportunities for all individuals judging from their sexual
orientation, gender, ethnic background, disability, and social status. Individuals from inferior
groups have been suffering since five decades ago, and they still face tough times while trying to
survive in modern times. A person of color in America in the 80s made it impossible for
individuals to access the essential services that are connected to a quality life (PiepznaSamarasinha, 2018). It was even worse if such an individual had a disability that prevented them
from functioning normally.
