Akhenaton the Heretic Pharaoh 1352-26 BCE
Akhenaten was an Egyptian pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty. He was also called
‘Akehnaton,' 'Khuenaten,' or 'Ikhnaton'1. All these names meant 'of great importance to' or
'successful for' Aten, a god. Akhenaten chose to use this name after he converted to a cult known
as Aten. Before then, his name was Amenophis IV or Amenhotep IV. His father was Amenhotep
III, who reigned from 1386-53 BCE with Tiye, his wife. Akhenaten's reign lasted for about five
years only during which he was a staunch believer and follower of his father's policies and
religious traditions2. However, in his last year as the pharaoh, he transformed and changed his
dedication from Amun to Aten cult and onwards, he was referred to as a heretic pharaoh.
Akhenaton abolished the Egyptian old traditional religious practices and implemented the first
one god state in the globe.
When he assumed power, his family has been reigning in Egypt for nearly two hundred
years. They had also established a large empire dominating Nubia, Phoenicia, and Palestine.
Several decades ago, Thutmose III conquered Nubia and the Middle East and creating an army
priesthood which controlled the entire empire3. Amun of Thebes was the center of the empire,
and its priests possessed strong powers. Egypt's imperial elegance was supreme, confident, and
rich, with officials and soldiers established in other nations. Foreigners visited and were
sometimes allowed to live in the empire, bringing new ideas and customs. The king was raised in
a changing Egypt4.
