LEARNING LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES

Abstract

Ben Zimmer, a Yale University graduate with a bachelor in linguistics and
linguistic anthropology from Chicago University. Language acquisition theory according
to Zimmer is described as “chunking”. These canned phrases like” make yourself at
home” work in social situations and an English learner like his son Blake might adapt the
phrases as they are as it is applicable in real-life situations although the structural rules
are secondary. Zimmer states how recently, acquiring a second language especially
English has become focused on “chunking”. Chunking is where children or non- native
speakers learn a language in lexical chunks: strings of memorized words, rather than a
word by word basis. Chunks could be fixed phrases or word combinations that tend to
appear strung together. Ben Zimmer says that although chunking as a method of teaching
although open to criticism, will most likely take over teaching the English language in the
coming years.
Alexie Sherman is a Native American poet, novelist, and film maker who was
raised in the Spokane Indian reservation in Washington. Alexie recalls the hardships of
being an Indian kid in the US. He taught himself how to read earlier than the kids in his
kindergarten class by reading the comic book of superman. His father was an avid reader
and bought an assortment of books and Alexie’s love for his father made him pick up one
of those books in an attempt to make out the foreign words. This is how Alexie learned
about paragraphs, which he proceeded to apply to is life by classifying everything in
paragraphs. As Indian kids in a non-Indian country, he recounts the society’s expectation
of their failure but he refused to become a stereotype. He read all manner of things like
cereal boxes, bulletin boards at the dentist, auto repair manuals and so forth. He became a

writer and a poet, to his surprise, unheard of in the Indian community. Now he tours
schools to encourage Indian children to read and love books in an effort to save their
lives.

to perform as a member of the global nation, many of which its members speak an
entirely different language. It seems the unofficially agreed-upon language is English.
Learning a new language is very exciting, however, it can be a difficult process especially
if the first language spoken is structurally different from the acquired language. However,
there are easier w...
