The resolution of conflicts in international trade is one of the functions of the
Organization for World Trades (WTO) (González, 2018). Any member countries that have
evidence that proves that other members have violated trade agreements can file complaints
with the WTO. Sanctions can be levied on offending countries if the WTO determines that
the case is valid. But in order to determine if trade agreements have been violated, WTO staff
must first conduct investigations. The WTO was established in order to protect member
countries against trade protectionism; the practice of countries retaliating against subsidies,
tariffs or dumping by other countries by doing exactly the same thing done to them. For
instance, the reason for the extended period of the Great Depression was trade protectionism,
where international trade declined by almost 25 %. International trade conflicts affect not
only countries involved but it also hurts other countries that trade with the conflicting parties.
