Running head: COMMEMORATIVE SPEECH
Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen
I want to take this opportunity to read my commemorative speech on one guy who more
than a half of you may be unfamiliar about, yet his work and contributions to his society have
been recognized worldwide. I would like to talk about Abiy Ahmed Ali, the current Ethiopian
Prime minister and the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Abiy was born in Ethiopia, one of the
countries that for years were characterized by ethnic clashes and political instabilities due to poor
governance. Like other African countries such as Liberia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and
Chad, Ethiopia has for years been stagnant when it comes to socio-economic and political
developments due to one main factor-war. However, since his appointment as the country’s
prime minister on 2nd April 2018, Abiy has transformed the country as well as other neighboring
nations like Sudan, Eritrea, and South Sudan, by launching wide programmes aimed at
promoting socio-economic and political reforms in these countries.
Abiy Ahmed was born in Beshasha, in the historic Kaffa Province of Ethiopia on 15
August 1976. He was the 13th child of his father, Ahmed Ali, and the sixth and youngest child of
his mother, Tezeta Wolde (McKenna, 2019). He attended local primary and secondary schools
before joining Microlink Information Technology College in Addis Ababa, where he acquired
his first degree in computer engineering. Surprisingly, he received this degree while still serving
as a member of the Ethiopian National Defense Force. He later joined the Greenwich University,
in London, where he received his Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership. He also holds a
Master of Business Administration which he received from the Leadstar College of Management
and Leadership in Addis Ababa.
It is, however, his decision to join national politics that has significantly changed his life
and those of his people. He started his political career in 2005 when he joined the Oromo
Democratic Party (ODP), a party that has been the Ethiopia’s ruling party since 1991. In 2010,
Abiy was elected the Member of Parliament for Woreda, where he joined the lower chamber of
the Ethiopian Federal Parliamentary Assembly (McKenna, 2019). As an MP, one key
contribution he made was his proactive role in working with several religious institutions in
Ethiopia to bring peace and reconciliation (BBC News, 2019). For years, Ethiopian has been
associated with myriad of religious clashes between Muslims and Christians, which often results
in loss of life and property. Under his leadership, Abiy oversaw the establishment of Religious
Forum for Peace, which is a forum that devises sustainable resolution mechanisms to restore
peaceful interaction between Muslims and Christians in th...
