Introduction
a. Introduce the topic with background information and define terminology
Studies indicate that Sexually Transmitted Disorders are infections that are transmitted from an
infected individual to an individual is who is uninfected, especially through sexual intercourse.
Statistics indicate that Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are on the rise in America.
According to research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as
per 2017, Chlamydia has had a 22 percent increase from 2014 to 2017, gonorrhea has risen by 67
percent and Syphilis by 76 percent. Notably, STDs have been known to human beings for
centuries and before the advent of modern medicine, most of the individuals were unaware and
lacked the understanding of STDs and thus it greatly spread from one population to another. In
this century, syphilis and gonorrhea are the most prevalent in most countries. It is crucial to
acknowledge that some of the STDs have serious consequences that affect one’s life, for
instance, syphilis can lead to continued malfunctioning of the brain and spinal cord and this may
result in mental illness. Additionally, research indicates that STDs affect individuals of all ages
but it greatly affects the young population. CDC approximates that youths from the age of 15-24
years constitute just one-quarter of the population that is actively involved in sexual intercourse
but they account for half of the population with new sexually transmitted infections that take
place in America annually.
