PURPOSE:
- To write an Article Review of an article from Harvard Business Review or HR Magazine
- To continuously improve writing and formatting skills.
ASSIGNMENT:
Find an article from Harvard Business Review (HBR) or HR Magazine, written in the last 10 years (2009-2019), which focuses on motivation. Address all of the following components:
- Summarize the article in 1-2 paragraphs. This should be an overview of the article, specific details about the content should be included in other components of the assignment, this is a summary. Remember to cite your article, it is the source!
- Discuss the specific aspect of motivation being addressed in the article. Is it a theory, a practice, and/or an application? Remember to cite your article, it is the source!
- How does the motivation discussion from the article relate to what you learned from the textbook (Chapter 11-Motivation)? Can you see any connection or relationship to any of the theories? Here you will need to cite both the article and the textbook in the discussion.
- How could a manager read this article and apply the information in practice? Back up all your statements with other scholarly sources, including the article and textbook (if applicable).
INSTRUCTIONS:
- All written content of the assignment should be in paragraph form, no bullet or numbered lists.
- Assignment must include a minimum of 4 scholarly sources. The article will count as one source, the textbook will count as one source; therefore, at least two other scholarly sources are required.
- Article MUST BE properly cited on the Reference Page so that professor can go find the article.
- If professor cannot find the article based on the reference, significant points will be deducted. A website URL link is NOT SUFFICIENT! All required components of a properly formatted APA reference are required.
- Article review should be 2-3 content pages, not including title page or references.
- USE THE LIBRARY RESOURCES TO HELP YOU ACCESS HBR AND HR MAGAZINE!!!!

Summary
The article “Gift cards – the ultimate Christmas staff reward?” written by Sarah
Chesterton for the HR magazine discusses the importance of motivating employees around the
Christmas holiday (Chesterton, 2019). Chesterton discusses the significance of choosing this
time of the year to show appreciation to employees; it is an opportunity to appreciate employees
for a good year and motivate them for the coming year as well. She goes on to deliberate about
the best reward to offer employees. The gift of cash seems to be the obvious choice but
according to the article, this would have a somewhat lukewarm reception as cash rewards often
get swallowed up by salaries and leave an unimpressive mark (Chesterton, 2019).
According to Chesterton, the best reward at this time of the year would be a gift card
because it separates from the alary and offers immediate gratification (Chesterton, 2019).
Recipients are forced to actively seek to redeem the card which plays a good reminder of the
reason they got the card enhancing a positive association for the employer. Gift car...
