NSC Structure Comparison Paper Instructions

In this assignment students will examine how different presidents have structured their National Security Council. Specifically, the student will discuss: 1) How the two modern NSC structures were similar. 2) How the two structures were different. 3) The strengths of each formation. 4) The weaknesses of each structure. 5) Develop a proposed structure for the current POTUS

Introduction

National Security Council is a committee under the executive arm of the government that is
tasked with the responsibility of guiding and advising the head of a state on matters relating to
national security, information relating to military forces, and foreign affairs. The National Security
Council is very vital in every country as it ensures efficiency and effectiveness of a country’s
security sector in meeting its objectives and goals, enhances civilian management and control, the
council enhances democratic governance and control and oversight. The National Security Council
is also significant in ensuring transparency and accountability on primary security-related
decisions; it enhances security sector legitimacy and appropriate allocation of resources as well.
The council also plays a pivotal role in proactively preventing war or conflict through negotiation
and effective reconstruction in post-conflict scenarios. The paper will analyze the National
Security Councils of the USA and that of the United Kingdom while giving the differences and
similarities as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each structure. The paper will then give the
current POTUS structure.

The National Security Council of the USA and that United Kingdom have significant relationships
not only in the skeleton structure of the NSC but in the functions and roles. Structurally, both are
under the chairmanship of the head of state, the president in America, and the prime minister in
the United Kingdom (Bangham et al. 2012). Both are structured in a manner that best serves the
situation of the home country, the National Security Council of America is mainly structured in
manner that would will enable it to deal with its main threats such as threat to peace due to
terrorism, the use of missiles against America and national security affairs (Bangham et al., 2012).

Similarly, the NSC of the United Kingdom is structured to predominantly combat threats of
production of weapons that confer to mass destruction, espionage, and terrorism.
Both the National Security Council structures of America and the United Kingdom have been
formulated in a manner that will enhance the achievement of the government’s security goals. Both
are structured to ensure efficient operations of the national security and effectiveness to meet the
