Instructions for Acid-Base Titrations Lab Report (25pts) The entire report needs to be typed, INCLUDING CALCULATIONS. Make sure you have all units included and apply the significant figures rules. Reminder Plagiarism is strictly forbidden and will be grounds for automatic failure of an assignment (a grade of “0” will be given to both parties). Please include the following (all stapled together): -Cover page with the title of experiment, date, your name, name of lab partner and abstract (….include %error as well, maximum 3-5 sentences) -Table and calculations for Part 1 -Carbon copies of lab notebook (put them last after postlab questions) -Postlab questions: 1. Obtain the actual % acetic acid in your unknown from your instructor and use that to calculate the error and %error for your sample. 2. A student got 8.97% error for his experiment. Suppose that he got the correct pale pink color at the endpoint ad his calculations were correct. List two reasons why he may have gotten such a large %error. An error in calculations was not one of them. 3. Why must the beaker used to obtain the standard NaOH solution be dry? 4. You used a 10.00 mL volumetric pipet to dispense the vinegar sample. Can you use a cylinder instead if it has the same precision? 5. Consider the following balanced acid/base reaction: 2 HCl + Ba(OH)2 -> BaCl2 + 2 H2O A student pipetted 2500 mL of a 0.339M solution of HCl into an Erlenmeyer flask. The student calculated that 20.81 mL Ba(OH)2 was needed to neutralize the acid. Calculate the molarity of Ba(OH)2 in the unknown solution. 6. In an aqueous solution the [H3O+] is 8.97x 10-4.M. a. Is this solution acidic, basic or neutral? b. What is the [OH-]? 7. The measured pH of a solution is 12.984. a. Is this solution acidic, basic or neutral? b. Calculate the [H3O+] c. Abstract:
In this laboratory experiment we used Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) and Vinegar (CH3COOH).
We titrated Sodium Hydroxide of known molarity against the acid with the help of an indicator.
This is a qualitative analysis in which we determine the amount of acid which will neutralize
the known amount of base.
We titrated 0.2212M of NaOH with vinegar to calculate the percent of acetic acid in vinegar.
Three trials were carried out for the experiment and result was averaged out. It was found to
be 4.35% acetic acid vinegar.
Introduction:
Acids and bases are part of our daily life. Acid is characterized by sharp taste, for example the
presence of tartness in lemon signifies presence of citric acid. Similarly, sourness of wine is
due to tartaric acid. Similarly, bases are signified by their bitter taste like Household Ammonia
NH4OH.
The titration equivalence point is when acid is completely neutralized by the base. At this
equivalent wei...
