Summary
The article begins with three quotes. The first one is from Deuteronomy 15, which explains
how God instructs Israelites to free Hebrew slaves who had served them for more than six years.
God also needs the people of Israel to support the slaves financially in remembrance of when the
Israelites were slaves in Egypt. Another quote is from John Locke - it explains how the importance
of seeking reparation when a person is offended by another. Finally, a quote from an enslaved
person, “the labor and suffering have given us the right to be Americans...”, closes the section of
quotes.
Therefore, the story of Clyde Ross – an African-American bone in Mississippi in 1923 –
follows. In this regard, Ross’ early childhood is characterized by a well-off family that owns a lot
of property, including a big-sized firm. The family wants nothing from the government, but the
full protection of the law. During that time, Mississippi had more Africa-Americans than any other
state. However, Africa-Americans faced oppression, and they could not enjoy basic sociopolitical
rights. The Ross family also faced oppression since it was accused of tax evasion. Since the family
could not respond effectively, the state took the family’s assets and forced it to engage in
sharecropping.
The oppression of Africa-Americans led to a lack of opportunities for Black children. In
this regard, Ross could not access a better education since ...
