Introduction
The paper is a case study of Walmart to investigate the influence of financial
rewards on performance. Walmart is a multinational retail company with 1.3 million U. S
store workers. The discussion is limited to Walmart's US. According to Wahba (2015,
June 8), Walmart announced to increase starting wages for thousands of workers in
efforts to improve customer services. This initiative cost the company an extra $1 billion
annually, and it encouraged employees to have a long-term career with the company.
The company also includes cash incentives to an employee for the best-selling of
particular products. Walmart also uses non-monetary systems to motivate employees
by encouraging intrinsic rewards. For instance, the company emphasis on calling
employees associates to make them feel more engaged with the company. The
company also set goals to encourage competition among employees as a means to
achieve high goals. Direct financial compensations better motivate employees and
promote high performance than non-monetary systems or non-direct financial
