Position Paper: Power, Politics, and Culture

Institutional Affiliation

Wells Fargo has learned that an unreasonable expectation is one of the main ingredients
of a competitive disadvantage. Power and politics have an integral role to play in an organization
and they have the power to make or break an organization. According to organizational
development scholars, it has been proven that these two elements have a major impact on an
organization because they can influence or affect decision making all the way from the top
management to the lower position in the company. In addition, power and politics can influence
how employees interact with each other as well as how they interact and serve customers among
other ethical deeds. Imperative research indicates that the impact of power is mainly determined
on the manner in which employees use the power bestowed upon them wither negatively or
positively and this is what determines the progress or loss of an organization. On the other hand;
politics is said to have direct influence on power as well as the ability to determine the entire
culture of a company.

After the much publicized scandal, Wells Fargo has come up with more than a few
strategies that are aimed at protecting customers as well as protect the company image and
reputation (Teo & Kimes, 2019). One of the these measures was the implementation of IT
support framework that is designed assist employees, customers as well as the management to
easily access and navigate the company’s system in the vent they suspect a foul play on their
accounts among other things.

Having the power to change its framework has been quite helpful to Wells Fargo because
it has enabled the company to change more than a few dynamics within the company. According
to a report from the company; one of the main changes that the company has managed to make is

to develop a framework that does not encourage unethical deeds such as unreasonable
expectations among other things. In fact; this shows that having and exercising positive power
build confidence among employees as well as motivates them to do better and in accordance to
the company’s rule and ethics (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn & Osborn, 2016).

Power can be both advantageous as well as disadvantageous. Positive power can make an
organization grow beyond its expectations. For example; when employees exercise power in a
positive manner they can become productive and increase the company’s performance. A good
example is when employees who have been trusted with customer’s details especially in the
banking sector ensure they do everything to protect the customer’s money as well as details. On
the other hand, when power is improperly used it can be quite damaging and destroy a company
like it almost did to Wells Fargo by acting in unethical manner (Alapo, 2018).

Power comes in different forms and based on this case study; there are five major forms
of power that will discussed mainly legitimate, expert, referent, coercive as well as reward. One
of the core principles of legitimate power is derived from the position a person holds in a
company’s hierarchy. Using this type of power, managers have the power to influence
employees to do their jobs in accordance to the company’s requirement because they are the boss
and he employee has to do what they ask them to do in order to keep the job. The second form of
power is the expert power which entails manly knowledge. Ideally; this type of power is mostly
derived from people who posses certain expertise on a certain profession or field. In many cases,
leaders use this form of power to influen...
