1.Drawing on Doris Kearns Goodwin's Bully Pulpit and the essays by Hargrove on Taft and TR,
and Umbreit, and Barber on Taft, what factors stand out as distinguishing the personalities,
leadership styles, constitutional views of the presidency, and temperaments of TR and Taft?
Discuss the experience and personal qualities that made TR a successful leader and President.
Then, drawing on Kearns Goodwin, Umbreit, and Hargrove, explain why, and in what manner,
Taft seemed more energized, more fulfilled, and more productive as Chief Justice (and Secretary
of War, for that matter) than he had been as President. Why does Umbreit see Taft as an
indispensable part of TR's administration as a trouble-shooter, confidant, and administrative
aide? Why did the two men ultimately clash when Taft became President?
PART II: Write and essay of 4-5 pages on ONE of the following:
1.Drawing on the essays by William Leuchtenburg, Doris Kearns Goodwin, James David Barber
and Stephen Hess, write a major essay on Franklin Roosevelt in which you assess his
background, education and personality, his struggle with polio, and his ultimate rise to the
presidency. Then, discuss Roosevelt's presidency with regard to the crises and challenges he
faced, both domestic and foreign. Why are terms like “intuitive," "ad-hoc," "experimental” and
"freewheeling,” used in describing Roosevelt's leadership? What were some of the key
ingredients of Roosevelt's style and approach to leadership? Give examples. Finally, what were
some of Roosevelt's major accomplishments as both a domestic and war-time leader of the
United States?
לל
2. Drawing on Fred Greenstein's book The Hidden Hand Presidency: Eisenhower as Leader,
and Henderson's essay on Eisenhower's Leadership, discuss and describe the significance of
Eisenhower's leadership style, decision-making rigor, and his hidden-hand leadership. Give
examples of his analytical/decision-making ability (especially as discussed by Greenstein on
pages 15-35) and in his chapter on “Organization, and in Henderson. Then provide examples of
his hidden-hand leadership, including the appointment of a new Ambassador to Great Britain (pp
88-89), the handling of the press's question on potential use of atomic weapons (pp. 68-70), the
use of Texan Sid Richardson's influence to exert pressure on Lyndon Johnson to be more
supportive (59-60); and Eisenhower discussion of the command of Greek and Turkish forces
with the Italian Defense Minister (44-45).
