Do Patients Have a Natural Right to Die?
Introduction
Many cultures of the world view life as sacred and, therefore, value and protect it. Although such
a perspective is plausible, it is inefficient in catering for the needs for patients who are terminally
ill or those who no longer wish to continue living. Although no person chooses to be born, one
should have the ability to choose whether to live or die. Patients experience different kinds of
pain, some of which are agonizing and undermine the quality of the life they live. Also, patients
experience many emotions that inform their decision to either continue living or opt for death as
a means to find peace. Since patients experience the emotional and physical pain first hand, they
need should have a natural right to decide whether they live or die.
Points to Support Natural Right to Die
Patients should have the right to choose whether to live or die because of they have firsthand
experience of physical pain. Terminal illnesses such as cancer cause agonizing pain to patients.
In some situations, the pain is extreme and does not respond to strong pain killers such as
morphine. The implication is that such a patient is doomed to suffer the pain until the tie they die
naturally, regardless of how long it takes. Rather than delay the inevitable expose the patient to
undue pain, it is better to allow to exercise the right to choose whether to live or die. Patients
with terminal illness ought to have the right to such a choice (Corcoran, n.p.). Otherwise,
exposing patients to such pain is both inhumane, illogical, and unethical.
Another reason that supports the notion of patients having the natural right to die is the
emotional pain that they experience. Emotions are an important aspect of one’s wellbeing. When
a person’s emotions are not well, there is a high probability of them becoming insane. Various
diseases expose patients to different emotions. The negative emotions add to the physical pain
that such patients feel and, therefore, worsen their wellbeing. Rather than allow the emotional
trauma to compound the physical pain that patients feel, the natural right to die can assist.
The natural right to die encourages organ transplantation. Some patients opt to die when
they know the terminal disease they have is bound to destroy all or some of the internal organs
that they have. The natural right to death provides an opportunity to save such organs and donate
them to other patients (Math and Santosh, n.p). The right to die allows organ donors to save other
lives since the organs can be donated to different people. For instance, the kidneys can be
donated to a kidney patient while the heart is donated to another patient. The natural right...
