Decision-making is an essential process for every consumer. Consumers make choices
that determine their preferences for a product over another. They have to weigh several factors in
deciding on the product where they will derive maximum utility. The higher the utility, the
higher the possibility of purchasing the product, as suggested by De Palma (2007). Consumers
use compensatory and non-compensatory models to strategize their decision-making. This paper
will discuss the fundamentals of these two models and explain how they strategize the
consumer's decision. It will also highlight the differences between the two models as well as
their limitations, exclusively.
The compensatory model is widely used in the decision-making process by consumers.
The decision is arrived at by considering the brand and other features. This model is based on the
premise that good attributes can be traded off with acceptable bad attributes in the process of
decision-making. For instance, if you are looking for a quality low rent house with modern
security technology, swimming pool, and a sizeable backyard, you might decide to compensate
this with a cheaper house with a sea view with conducive attributes that much your desired
preference. Conversely, the non-compensatory model is built on the principle that some
preference attributes cannot be compensated by other attributes that may serve the same
objectivity. Thus, consumer positive and negative considerations may not influence their
decisions.
