On the basis of your readings, address the following:

  • This study is repeatedly referred to as an "experiment." Briefly discuss the elements of the various experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Which design model best fits this study?
  • Briefly discuss the role of pretests and post tests in experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Were pretests and post tests used by the study's authors? Describe the efforts and actions performed by the study's authors to establish their research. What issues did they encounter while executing the study? How were these issues circumvented and their impact on validity minimized?
  • Briefly describe two ethical issues that arose during the design phase of this study. How did the authors address those ethical concerns in the execution of the study?
  • Analyze and examine to what degree the results of the experiment inform and influence public policy delivery currently.

Quasi-experimental and experimental designs are among the most commonly used
research designs. Quasi-experimental designs involve identifying a comparison group that has
similar characteristics to the treatment group. The comparison is used to determine what the
results would have been had a policy not been implemented (White & Sabarwal, 2014). The
design is mostly adopted where no control groups are available and random selection cannot be
used (IOWA State Unversity, 2019). Interrupted time-series design, nonequivalent groups
design, combination designs, and pretest-posttest design are the main quasi-experimental design
variations available (Price, Chiang & Jhangiani, 2019). In nonequivalent groups design, no
random conditions are assigned to the participants. The result is usually having groups that are
dissimilar in various forms (Price et al., 2019a). Interrupted time-series design involves taking
measurements at intervals over a given period. In pretest-posttest design measurements of the
dependent variable are taken before and after the treatment is implemented (Price et al., 2019).
The combination design takes advantage of the strengths of the two aforementioned designs and
combines them to come up with a single design.
The other research design is experimental. It is carried out by manipulating one or several
variables and observing and measuring the reactions of random subjects referred to as dependent
variables (Wharrad, 2009). Between subject experiments, random assignment, treatment and
control conditions, and simultaneous within-subject designs are the main experimental designs.
