The Great southwest railroad strike happened in 1886 following disagreements between
the workers and the organizational management. The strike first took place in Texas and the
spread to other states such as Kansas, Missouri, Southern Illinois and Arkansas. The strike began
when one employee working under one of Jay Gould’s companies as fired for attending a union
meeting on company time. Jay Gould was at the time one of the wealthiest men in the country
where he owned about 15% of the operational railroads. Workers under his company were
however poorly paid and they had therefore formed unions to protest for better pay and working
