Homework problems: Chapter 18-19

  • What’s the structure of atoms? How many electrons, protons and neutrons are there in 6C12, 13Al27, respectively?
  • What are the three types of radioactivities?
  • What are nuclear fission and nuclear fusion, respectivety? Where does the nuclear energy come from?
  • How much energy will be released if the mass loss in a nuclear reaction is 0.5 kilogram?
  • Is a fish swimming in river located at the exact position you observe? Why or why not?
  • What is your understanding of nuclear reaction? Why does it release enormous energy?

1. Protons carry a positive charge and are found in the nucleus of the atom. The proton gives the
atom its identity. Neutrons are also found in the nucleus and have a neutral charge. Changing
the number of neutrons create isotopes. Electrons are found orbiting the nucleus. They have a
negligible size and mass. Changing the number of electrons creates ions.
