The One-Dimension Man is a book by Herbert Marcuse, a German by nationality and a
member of the Frankfurt School of philosophers. The book was written in 1964 during the period
of heightened political tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. The book
criticizes both communism and capitalism with the author in favor of Marxism. He argued that
both capitalism and communism reduced the ability for people to revolt and to engage in critical
thinking. Capitalism is blamed for creating a need for material things that most people didn't
need and which created the need for people to work rather than exercise their liberties
continuously.
