Cognitive Bias in the Workplace

The performance of a business organization is influenced by the attitude of its employees
towards the set goals. And this attitude is associated with a mindset known as cognitive bias.
And cognitive bias can be described as the tendency of having negative mental habits. It causes
disruption in the usual cognitive functions such as evaluation, reasoning, and memory recall. It is
caused by the tendency of the people putting their personal beliefs, preferences, and moods. This
type of behavior has a negative impact in the workplace and consequently affects the
performance of the business organization. This is because it causes perceptual distortion,
illogical explanation, irrational thinking, and making a biased judgment. In a few cases,
cognitive bias can have a positive impact on the business organization's performance (Poirier,
2013).

There are various types of cognitive bias within any given workplace, but during my
teaching period, I would address three types only. They entail; confirmation bias, negativity bias,
and self-enhancement bias. Confirmation bias involves employees looking at their workmates
who appear to think the same as them. This entails making friends with colleagues who seem to
agree with their beliefs. It may also involve selectively recollecting acts and statistics and
