You must pose a provocative, clearly defined thesis, problem, or question and cogently present an argument based on critical and sensitive evaluation of primary and/or secondary sources, as appropriate to the type of project submitted. The project in question must be placed firmly within the scholarly context; i.e., it must acknowledge the scholars who have influenced the question as well as assess the importance of those scholars' contributions in the context of the question. Your research project will culminate in a 20-page (minimum) scholarly paper in Standard Academic English and follow the APA or the Chicago Manual of Style forms of citation. The abstract is to be between 75-100 words articulating your thesis or research question with precision. The proposal is to be roughly 750 words that make the case for your project. Abstract

Springfield, Newtown, Littleton, and West Paducah are some of the locations that have
suffered the school shootings tragedy. School shootings can affect teachers, students, and other
school staff members. Those who witness school shootings can suffer from physical, emotional,
and psychological effects. School shootings studies have been carried out in various disciplines
like sociology, psychology, and political science. The research article gives a typology for
knowing multiple incidences of school shootings, causes, and effects that school shootings have
on students and school faculty. The purpose of the study is to develop a more comprehensive
understanding of the cause of school shootings, and its effects on the students.

The Effect of School Shootings on Students and School Faculty
Introduction
School shootings are mostly in dramatic nature, and they provoke a public outcry. Since 1997,
there has been an occurrence of various cases of school shootings, which has led to the
questioning of the morality of the youth culture. "Columbine" event is an indication of the
contemporary crisis associated with youth culture. School shootings have a long-term effect on
the children or students attending the school and their teachers. Witnesses and survivors of
school shootings suffer from emotional, psychological, physical effects. Some of these effects
include stomach problems, headaches, nightmares, sleeping problems, and resistance in returning
to the school. Other symptoms as per the American Psychology Association are a decline in
students' performance, changes in how they relate with their friends and teachers, loss of interest
in numerous activities that were before exciting and anxiety. Different disciplines have been
involved in the study of school shootings to come up with a precise cause of this traumatic event.
Some of these disciplines include psychology, sociology, and political science. Psychology tries
to explain the role that the mind plays on the behavior of the shooters, and political science
explains how political views can influence shooting. Sociology outlines negative social
interactions and their result in violent behavior. This research project will help in understanding
the causes of school shootings and their effects on students and school faculty at large.
Statement of Problem
The plague of school shootings has increased all over the nation. Gun violence from
every corner of the United States, as indicated in the article, "Columbine to Newton," a list of

schools that have suffered gun violence since 1999. According to various studies, factors that are
behind mass shootings in schools include mental illness, absent parents, and lack of family
supervision, dysfunction in families, bullying, among other psychological issues. The causes of
school shootings can be categorized into three disciplines, which include sociology, political
science, and psychological reasons. According to existing literature, the two major causes of
school shootings are bullying, which accounts for 87% of gun violence cases, and side effects
from psychiatric drugs accounting for 12 percent. Many shooters left behind evidence that
indicated that they were victims of severe bullying and, for a long time, had experienced feelings
of humiliation, which resulted in revenge. School shootings have had various adverse effects on
the students, teachers, and faculty. Many students suffered mental disorders and post-traumatic
stress disorder and a decline in performance levels. Also, teachers and other staff members
experienced mental disorders, which resulted in depression. Schools recorded high rates of
school drop-outs and poor performance.
Significance of the Research
The data used for this research paper is from the rich literature review that will show the causes
and effects of school shootings on students and the faculty. Various scholars have carried out an
intense study and a meta-analysis to identify critical factors leading to gun violence in schools
and estimated the relationship between school shootings and educational outcomes. The
proposed research will shed some light on disciplines that are potentially relevant to the study
and the assumptions of these disciplines. The three disciplines that will be discussed include
psychology, sociology, and political science. Psychology assumes that the mind has an effect on
human behavior, and political science states that status and political views motivate human
behavior. On the other hand, sociology makes the assumption that social interactions can be a

factor in human behavior. For instance, bullying has been identified as the critical cause of
school shootings. It is essential to understand the key causes of school shootings so that the key
stakeholders in the education system can come up with long-lasting solutions to this fatal
incidence. Additionally, the students will also know what to avoid to avoid incidences of gun
violence. Conclusion validity will be based on the in-depth literature reviews from various
scholars who have identified key causes of school shootings and their impacts on students, staff
members, and school at large. Some of the literature has provided statistics on the number of gun
violence that has occurred since the Columbine school shooting.
Research Design
The causes and effects of school shootings will be researched using literature reviews
from various scholarly journals and peer-reviewed articles on the topic. The literature review will
consist of a deeper analysis of sociological and psychological journal articles concerning school
shootings topic through online library searches. "The effects of High School Shootings and
Student Performance" journal article will be the primary reference for much of the initial data on
the effects of the school shooting.
