Description

- The five-paper minimum means five full pages – a cover page does not count as one of these pages, nor does a reference page, and getting a paragraph onto the fifth page does not count as a full page.

- You should use double spacing, a common font, and size 12 font size

- You should have a reference page - you don't have to include your annotated bibliography, but include all the sources you used.

- Here's a guide for how to cite different types of sources - notably, don't simply post a URL without giving the title, author (if any), etc. - http://www.citationmachine.net/mla/cite-a-website; you can use either Chicago or MLA style

- You should have citations from your sources in your paper whenever you are using information that you gained from these sources. Do not use any direct quotes or working from the articles without placing them in quotation marks and citing where you got the quotes. Otherwise this is a clear case of plagiarism. Summarizing someone else’s argument or rewording it is likewise something for which you need to provide a citation.

- In your introductory section you should have some sort of statement aimed at the reader that states clearly what you are going to be doing in the paper. Don’t simply jump into the paper – let the reader know what to generally expect from your approach, and there’s no need to hint at your conclusion. Ex. “In this paper I will be examining the issue/problem of X. I will do so by examining elements of this issues including A, B and C.”

- Have clear sections in your paper - I already suggested that you divide the main part into three sub-sections. If, for instance, you were writing a paper on the expansion of Nascar's audience , you might write, “In this paper I will be examining a transition in the audience for NASCAR by focusing on 1) Nascar's efforts to attract females, 2) Nascar's efforts to attract African Americans, and 3) Nascar's strategies on social media. Then proceed to write a bit about the background of the issue - its founding, that Nascar was traditionally a largely white, male, Southern audience, and that more recently it's grown, and then proceed to the main section. After going over the three subsections, then have a conclusion.

Basic information

The term paper, which should be a minimum of five full pages long (not including a cover or bibliography pages) and is due during the last week of regular class, is your opportunity to apply some of the ideas that you've learned about popular culture in this course, and apply these insights to a topic that you want to investigate.

The main idea behind the paper is to investigate how a particular cultural issue has changed over time – earlier in the course we saw dramatic examples in the articles about Shakespeare and Boston. I certainly don’t expect anything on the scale of those, but instead want you to discover some of the basic processes underlying cultural change.

You can look at things such as new trends, the emergence and transformation of subcultures, how the cultural status of various phenomenon change over time—in other words a very wide variety of topics, and I hope that you’ll be imaginative in picking them. Please consider choosing something that you’re very interested in rather than simply picking something from the suggested list below!

The topic is on extreme makeup and the sources are attached in the annotated bib.

EXTREME MAKEUP
Introduction and Background Information
We live in an image-centric world, and with such platforms as Facebook and Instagram,
people are more concerned about their physical appearance than some decades ago. In other
words, people are more concerned with followers and likes on Instagram. According to
Vinakmens (2016, November 15), natural beauty cannot afford individuals such a level of
beauty, and hence, we are now in the era of extreme makeup. Makeup is no longer a genderspecific thing, and men have also joined the use of makeup. For men there could be a general
view that it common among those who identify as gay. However according to Troy Solomon an
artist and Instagram influencer all men can use make up irrespective of their sexuality (Min,
2019 May 3). The use of makeup among men in the US has grown, and the interest in use is
growing. According to Rafieyan (2019, November 12) men, the makeup market is estimated at
$1.1 billion of the $71 billion global cosmetic markets. Initially, ladies used only a few

cosmetics, but now both men and women have joined hands into the era of extreme makeup with
little gender boundaries. A person has obscure and diverse inspirations for makeup, mixing
different colors for different parts (Kale, 2019, August 27).
In this paper, I will be exploring the issue of extreme male makeup and the controversies
surrounding it. This is a reflection of changes that have occurred in the use of makeup,
challenging the view of makeup as a gender-specific thing. I will do this by examining the
elements of extreme male makeup, such as an increase in individual concerns on physical
appearance, the growing popularity in makeup use by men, and the obscure and diverse
inspirations in the use of makeup alongside controversies such as loss in masculinity, hindering
recognition technology. Male extreme makeup use is popular since there is increased concern in

physical appearance in the general population due to likes and followers' interests in social
platforms and increased campaign to challenge makeup as a gender and sexuality specific thing.
Increase in Individuals concerns for Physical appearance and Extreme Makeups use
The increased popularity of social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and
Instagram have increased general population concerns about their physical appearance. In social
media people are increasingly concerned about looking more beautiful. Some academic
researchers report that the general use of social media has changed individual’s perceptions
about themselves (Woodley, 2018). In addition to the concerns on general physical appearance
such as height, body shape and body weight there is increased concerns on being more ‘good
looking’. Some of the most significant issues among celebrities in the mainstream media were
plastic surgery and self-improvement. Perhaps in social media platforms such concerns as plastic
media could not be applicable by the billion users. Individuals have explored an alternative,
which is the extreme makeup use. Initially, those in use of extreme makeup would appear
outcasts by now, 'the more extreme, the better,' (Vinakmens, 2016, November 15). Beauty in
social media is beyond overdrawn lips and eyes and hence a concern is to create an entirely new
face. Extreme beauty is a new deal in the popular culture and the natural beauty cannot meet
such standards. Everyone on social media is concerned of extreme beauty to match the social
status which is judged by the likes and followers. We live in an image-centric world and natural
cannot attract the attention, and hence, the more is more makeup is the new trend. Individuals
have controversial opinions on the extreme use of makeup. Such concerns are individuals losing
their self-image. Opponents of extreme make up use consider that it is lack of individuality and
emulation of other people. Proponents of extreme make up use consider makeup as the most
effective art since individuals easily apply makeup, which can be easily washed at the end of the

day. Currently, the extreme use of makeup is thus an easy and popular alternative for improving
physical appearance.
Growing Popularity of Makeup use by Males
The use of makeup has, for long, been viewed as gender-specific ruling men out of use.
For men, using makeup attract common stereotype of gay. However, the use of makeup among
men is slowl...
