COSC 110 Assignment: Evaluating Websites Evaluating Websites: Open the Evaluating Websites box in the LibGuide, and play the video on the C.R.A.A.P. test. Have students download the CRAAP Test Worksheet file. Give students the Evaluating Websites Assignment (sample below); be sure to include how you want the worksheets to be submitted. Evaluating Websites Assignment Introduction: BSU’s LibGuide on “Sustainability and Green Computing” contains information on evaluating websites for use as sources for research papers. Find this LibGuide by one of the following: 1. On BSU’s website, click on Library -> LibGuides -> “Sustainability and Green Computing” LibGuide 2. Paste the direct link (http://bowiestate.libguides.com/sustainability) in the browser Click on the box named “Evaluating Websites”. View the C.R.A.A.P. Test video. Download the CRAAP Test Worksheet file. Use the Worksheet to evaluate each website below. 1. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/about/corporate-responsibility/environmental-sustainability 2. http://www.dhmo.org/ 3. Use a search engine to locate two websites on sustainability, and evaluate them. (Be sure it relates to our definition of “sustainability”.) That’s a total of 4 worksheet. Word Processing Project: Sustainability Paper and Presentation Background: Every General Education course must address BSU’s “Emerging Issue” of Sustainability. The Word Processing Project is the assignment that does this for COSC 110. Each student writes an original formal paper on a sustainability topic using MLA Style, with minimum 3 authoritative references cited. The “Sustainability and Green Computing” LibGuide provides resources for this project. Since sustainability applies to many resources, and there are many efforts by various organizations that focus on different resources. You can choose one of these topics from the list below. A few examples are: - Renewable Energy - Sustainability in Agriculture - Greenhouse Gases - Reducing Energy Use - LEED Building Standards - Clean Water - Air Quality - Reforestation - Carbon Neutrality - Recycling - Resilience (new part of BSU’s Climate Commitment) Also, the United Nations has identified 17 goals for a sustainable world. A student can choose one of these and research • What the UN is doing to support the goal • What the UN expects member countries to do • What the UN suggests that individuals do • What the student’s local government or other organization is doing Sample Assignments: Below are two sample assignments you can use for this project. Use these as templates for your Project assignment. They specify the paper audience, MLA Style, minimum 3 cited references, 3 – 5 pages, and the related Presentation part of the assignment. Sample Assignment 1: Sustainability Research Paper/Presentation Word Processing Project – Local Government Efforts Due ___________________; Presentations will be on _________ Choose a county in Maryland or the equivalent of a county in a neighboring state. (If you are from out-of-state, you may choose the equivalent of a county in your home state.) Research what these state and local governments are doing to promote environmental sustainability. Questions to consider include: • Focus: What resources is the area particularly focused on, and why are those so important to the region? • Organization: What are the agencies that carry out the efforts? • Who is in charge of sustainability efforts? How are leaders selected? • How do the governments publicize their efforts? How do they involve local citizens? • How is technology, especially computing technology, involved? Research the topic, using at least three authoritative, reputable sources, which are to be properly cited in the paper. Write a paper, using Word, to explain the issue to other University students. This is a formal paper; use correct grammar and formal language. Use MLA Style, as presented in your textbook. The LibGuide “Sustainability and Green Computing” has information to assist you with your research. Presentation: Also prepare a 5-minute presentation on your topic, to be presented in class. Include a visual display (illustrated slides, or perhaps a chart showing progress or trends), to be shown on the overhead projector. Sample Assignment 2: Sustainability Research Paper/Presentation Word Processing Project – Green Schools Due ___________________; Presentations will be on _________ Choose a university or college on the list in the Princeton Review’s 2019 Guide to Green Colleges, and conduct research to determine details regarding sustainability efforts at that school. Questions to consider can include: • Is there a relation between the geographic location of the school and the sustainability efforts being made? • What resources are the sustainability efforts focused on? • Who is in charge of sustainability efforts? What segments of the campus community are involved? • Specifically, how are students involved in sustainability? How are they organized, and what do they do? • How is technology, especially computing technology, involved? (Does it pose a problem to overcome, or is it used to solve problems?) Analyze the school’s sustainability efforts, with particular attention to student efforts, to determine what might be done at BSU to make our campus more sustainable. Research the topic, using at least three authoritative, reputable sources, which are to be properly cited in the paper. Write a paper, using Word, to explain the issue to other University students. Describe what you learned about the school you researched, relate the information to BSU, and propose a project in support of sustainability at BSU. This is a formal paper; use correct grammar and formal language. Use MLA Style, as presented in your textbook. The LibGuide “Sustainability and Green Computing” has information to assist you with your research. Presentation: Also prepare a 5-minute presentation on your topic, to be presented in class. Include a visual display (illustrated slides, or perhaps a chart showing progress or trends), to be shown on the overhead projector. ...

Sustainability of Agriculture in California
Agriculture is emerging as one of the key economic drivers of California State. The
sector contributes over fifty billion dollars in revenue for the State (Manley). That figure
represents two percent of the State’s revenue. It may appear a small fraction, but compared to
other United States of America (U.S.) states, it is a huge contribution to the economy.
California's agricultural production represents over twelve percent of total agricultural
production in all fifty U.S. states (Manley). Agriculture in California is diversified. It ranges
from the production of crops such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, wine grapes, bee
farming to livestock production. Therefore, it is evident that agriculture in California is practiced
at a large scale, and it has significant implications for the environment that need attention.
This paper will look at the resources such as water and land used for agriculture, the state
agencies involved in ensuring sustainable agricultural practices, the leadership of such state
agencies, the ways the state used to sensitize and involve citizens in sustainable agricultural
practice and finally look at how computer technology is used to improve agriculture in California
State.

Water and land Resources
The principle of Sustainability has to be observed for future generations to live
comfortably. Agricultural practices have the potential of destroying natural resources such as
water bodies, groundwater, and land. Statistics show that agriculture in California accounts for
eighty percent of the total water consumed in the entire State (California Department of Water
Resources). Thus, any attempt to reduce or use water efficiently in agricultural practices may
have a significant impact on water sustainability. Approximately, over nine million acres of land
are under irrigation. Those nine million acres of land draw water from groundwater sources and
water bodies such as lakes and rivers (California Department of Water Resources). Prudent use
of water to irrigate farms like using modern drip irrigation as opposed to open channels would
help in reducing water wastage.
Water and soil pollution
Agriculture is considered the primary source of water pollution in California. Farmers use
fertilizers and pesticides on their farms. The excess fertilizers and pesticides are swept to nearby
water bodies. It is approximated that over six hundred thousand tons of nitrogen fertilizer are
used every year on farms (Cheng and Thesing). However, less than half of that amount is
absorbed by crops and weed. The rest is leached into the soil and drained into water bodies. The
portion ...
