Describe the difference between a policy and a law and provide an example of each.
A policy is a systematic set of crucial decisions and principles that are supposed to
guide in decision making and ensure the attainment of the set goals. It is a statement of intent
which is implemented as a set protocol that defines improved outcomes. Policies can be
developed to guide a single organization or organizations, especially when they are developed
by an agency that oversees their operations (Kerwin & Furlong, 2018). An example of a policy
is ensuring that each employee should wear an official while on duty. Law is a system of rules
that are binding and are implemented on a governmental level, either federal or state level for
implementation within a given jurisdiction. Law regulates and ensures that there is unwavering
compliance considering that noncompliance is regarded as a violation of the law. An example
of law is the Clean Air Act, which is a law that regulates emissions that are harmful to the
environment.
Does a company policy override a local, state, or federal law, or does a local, state, or federal
law override a company policy? Justify your reasoning.
