The History and Discovery of the DNA Scientist
James Watson, a renowned scientist, is famous for his great molecular biology invention
alongside with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick. The trio has accomplished a milestone in
biology by discovering the structure and function of the DNA molecule. (Pray, 2008). Watson
has carried out a couple of research efforts that finally revealed additional information about the
DNA molecule that was previously unknown. He discovered the way the DNA strands are joined
to each other and their primary chemical components. As a result of their extensive research and
study, they won a Nobel Prize as their discoveries gave insight on the importance of the transfer
of the living material.
Watson was born in 1928 in Chicago, United States of America. Watson grew up with a
passion for ornithology. This was inspired by his hobby, which was watching the birds; this
hobby was shared with D. Watson, his father. (Pray, 2008).He frequently appeared on a known
radio station called Quiz Kids, where he was challenged to answer numerous questions. He then
joined the University of Chicago and was granted a tuition scholarship. Watson had a desire to
study ornithology but later changed his mind after reading the book' What Is Life?' That inspired
him to research genetics.
From the University of Chicago, Watson earned a degree in zoology. He later joined
Indiana University; he was mainly motivated by Hermann Joseph Muller, who won a Nobel
Prize in 1946. Muller had published papers and had an extensive explanation of the basic
properties of the hereditary molecule. James Watson had an intense interest in discovering more
concerning DNA, its structure, composition, and function, and this desire, therefore, lead him to
attain a Ph.D. degree in 1950 from Indiana University.

Watson met Francis Crick, who later became his collaborator in the discovery of the
function and structure of the DNA while he was working at the University of Cambridge’s
Cavendish laboratory. Watson focused on research on cancer and was associated with the
National Institute of Health, where he made a crucial impact in assisting in establishing the
Human Genome Project. Watson was particularly drawn into researching molecular biology by
