Marriage is one of the most important components of a functioning society. The
backbone of a society is defined by the type of marriages that are practiced there. After marriage,
the new couple has to decide where they are going to live. The three major forms of post-marital
residences are neolocal, patrilocal and matrilocal. Each of these types of residences has an
advantage and a disadvantage. A couple’s life could be made better or worse depending on
which type of residence they decide to take up.
A neolocal residence is where a couple moves away from both of their families to live on
their own. A new nuclear family is formed that is separate from the one that each member of the
couple comes from. In a neolocal residency, a couple may visit their parents only a few times in
