Overview
Tara Westover does a remarkable job of revealing the extremes experienced by American
depending on where one finds themselves. Westover tells the story of her childhood as well as
the challenges that she encounters in her academic life. It is my opinion the lessons that
Westover learns from her observations and life experiences have also taught me the same. From
the narrative, it is clear that Westover learns four major lessons.
Self-creation
Tara finds out that one has an obligation to their religious affiliation which may be
painful and yet it is regarded as necessary. She finds herself in a difficult situation whereby she
has to balance her intellect that drives her imagination with her love for her parents. During her
parent’s visit to Cambridge, she is sure that the only reason why they have visited her is to issue
a warning that a “disaster” awaits her if she fails to commit herself to their faith (Westover,
2018). In her opinion, Tara felt a strong belief that education is supposed to open up one’s mind
