project has already been selected. Why must a PM take the initiative to
understand why a project that he or she has been assigned to manage was
selected by an organization? What are the potential problems a PM may
encounter if he or she does not understand how a project he or she is
managing fits into the overall strategy of the organization? Use
examples to support your assertions. My response to the discussion forum:Understanding What A Project Entails It is crucial for a project manager to understand how the
project he or she assigned to was selected by an organization because
the processes involved in project management are pioneering, planning,
accomplishing, taking control and finishing up, that are required to
accomplish project’s requirements, which are reiterative in nature.
They are reiterative because there is the necessity for elaboration in
terms of the progress of a project across its lifecycle, which in turn
means that if one knows more about a project, he or she is at a better
position of managing it (Project Management Institute, 2017).
Furthermore, it is crucial for a project manager to understand the
project they were assigned to was selected by the organization because
they need to assess and measure the project’s value and executability.
This is achieved by the use of evaluation tools to assess whether to
pursue the project or not, for instance, the document where the need for
the project is justified and estimates of possible benefits financially
assessed, the practicability study where timeframe, goals, and costs
are evaluated.According to Lussier and Achua (2016), authentic and strong
leadership equates to a successful, engaged, and high-performing
workforce that results in a successful strategy implementation.
Competent project managers should possess proficient skills to guide the
team such that the best is achieved from the project team. Nonetheless,
project managers encounter predicaments more so if they fail to
understand how the project fits the organization’s strategy. Some of the
most critical problems they face include: the organization having
poorly defined goals that render the project manager and his team to
confusion if the objectives are not clearly defined, inadequate
communication more so when the project manager fails to provide
direction in every step of the project as is required of him or her,
impossible to meet deadlines, inadequate project resources, equivocal
contingency strategies, and poor team skills where a project manager who
is considered excellent at his or her work leads a team that lacks
skills resulting to failure (Heston, 2019) ReferencesHeston, E. (2019, January 17). Biggest challenges faced as a project

have once they find out that their project is low on the priority list

Managers are often not selected and assigned until after a project has
already been selected for multiple reasons, but all focusing around the
dynamic of the specific project, as well as, the organization’s overall
business and operational strategy. Project managers can be selected
based on their specific core competencies, and how their strengths can
help ensure the schedule completion and deliverables of the project,
within schedule, cost, and scope requirements. Other reasons could be
that the organization selected a project manager for a project as a
developmental reason, helping the PM grow and further help the
organization reach their organizational vision. In my workplace,
individuals are often selected for stretch assignments as opportunities
to not only help individuals develop, but also the organization by
having a dedicated pipeline of leaders.A Project Manager must take the initiative to understand why a
project that he or she has been assigned to manage was selected by the
organization because in order for the Project Manager to add value to
the organization and its customers, as well as, help the organization
achieve its strategic goals and vision, they must not only be able to
manage the project to successful completion, but also understand how it
is contributing to the overall success of the organization. In my
organization, we strive a lot for cultural development. Part of doing so
is to always explain the why behind things, as well as, how it contributes to overall mission success.Potential problems a Project Manager may encounter if he or she does
not understand how a project he or she is managing fits into the overall
strategy of the organization include micro level problems (scope creep,
failure meeting schedule requirements, cost overruns, variances in
quality), as well as, macro level problems (tasks being performed in
ways which do not meet organizational goals and vision, failure to
acquire LTAs and multi-year contracts, appropriate customer and public
interfacing, etc). It is important that not only a project manager, but
every employee, knows and understand how their daily performance
contributes to an organization meeting their overall strategy.ReferencesLussier, R. N., & Achua, C. F. (2016). Leadership: Theory, Application & Skill Development. Australia: Cengage Learning.Project Management Institute [PMI]. (2017). A Guide to the Project
