Hello, my name is Robert Andrews Millikan. I discovered the amount of charge
contained in an electron. The discovery was a result of the oil drop experiment project I
conducted with the assistance of my graduate student Harvey Fletcher (Beléndez, 2017). In
the experiment, I was attempting to estimate the quantity of charge of an electron (Hogan and
Hasbun, 2017; Beléndez, 2017). I first designed the chamber and connected it with an
atomizer, a pair of batteries, and a microscope (Beléndez, 2017). I decided to use an oil with
low vapor pressure to avoid loss of mass of oil droplets during the experiment due to heat
from the light source to be used. Inside the chamber, there was a top and bottom plate
connected to external batteries (Bishop, Xian and Feller, 2019). I separated the plates using a
ring-like spacer made of insulating material. The spacer had holes to allow light entry and
microscope access. I also made a small hole through the top plate. The atomizer acts just like
a perfume spray, and in this experiment, it sprays a mist of oil droplets inside the chamber. In
the first stage, I let the oil droplets fall through the hole in the top plate until they achieved
terminal velocity (Bishop, Xian and Feller, 2019). I measured the terminal velocity
microscope to of the oil droplets using the microscope. I then di...
