Description

Read an article that describes and discusses an emerging technology, product, device, or system. Relate the area to your chosen engineering major ( mechanical engineering) . Prepare a written report that analyzes and explains, in detail, each stage of the design process that was probably required in the development of this product or device. Apply the engineering design process discussed in class, and use specific examples to support your statements. Make sure you list your sources in the body of the paper or in a bibliography.

As a starting point, you might consider the annual lists of emerging technologies published by MIT Technology Review, or the Modern Marvels video we watched in class, or another source of interest to you.

Intro to Engineering Engineering Design Assignment Read an article that describes and discusses an emerging technology, product, device, or system. Your paper should state what technology you are writing about. Discuss the actual development of the item in question. Include issues such as why the item is desired, what problems the designers confronted, and specific design decisions that were made, answering the following questions to the extent possible: • What is the technology, product, device, or system you are writing about? • Why is it important? • Who are the key players? • When will it be available? • How are engineers in your discipline involved? • What technical issues need(ed) to be overcome? • What are the ethical issues? • What are the economic issues? • What are the environmental issues? • What are the global and/or societal issues? The paper should be be four or five pages long. Use an easily readable font like 12-point Times New Roman, or 11-point Arial, Verdana, Calibri, with 1 to 1.5 line spacing. Margins should be set to 1 inch all around. Be sure to use correct spelling and grammar. Cite references as appropriate. They may be online references, but no more than one may be Wikipedia or similar sites. Feel free to use MLA or APA or whatever you are familiar with. Criteria Description of Technology, Product, Device, System 3 points Description is stated. Relevant sketch or photo is included Related to Specific Engineering Discipline(s) 3 points Role of specific engineering discipline(s) is explained Key Players and Availability 3 points Key players and their roles are discussed, along with projected availability Related to Engineering Design Process Discussion of ethical, global, economic, environmental, societal issues 3 points Relevance of engineering design process is discussed 3 points Relevant issues are discussed in several areas 2 points Some description is stated or photo is included 2 points Specific engineering discipline(s) are listed 2 points Key players are listed, along with projected availability 2 points Some mention of engineering design process 2 points Relevant issues in some areas are missing 1 point No description or photo 1 point No mention of specific engineering disciplines 1 point No mention of key players or projected availability 1 point No mention of engineering design process 1 point Relevant issues are not discussed Mechanics and Style 3 points The paper is clear, concise, and consistent. It is easily understandable. The writing is near perfect with little to no grammar or spelling errors. 2 points The paper is mostly understandable. Minor grammar or spelling errors are present, but do not detract from the content. 1 point The paper is difficult to read/understand due to sentence/paragraph structure, word choices. Pervasive grammar or spelling errors distort meaning and make reading difficult. Citation 2 points 3 sources are cited, no more than one of which is Wikipedia 1 points 1 or 2 sources are cited 0 point No sources are cited

Introduction

The creation of autonomous cars may not be a new technology but creation of more
efficient and effective self-driven vehicles with a positive impact, a renewed capability, and
adherence to various engineering and transport policies is an emerging technology. Initial
creation of autonomous vehicles was featured with numerous ethical and mechanical concerns
that needed further improvements. Most technologies are discovered at first by the founder and
developed by other experts who may or may not work together with the founder (Faisal,
Yigitcanlar, Kamruzzman, & Currie, 2019). Specifically, the name of the technology under
scrutiny is ‘advancement of autonomous vehicles’ featured in the scholarly article by learners
and experts in the field of technology and engineering titled ‘Understanding Autonomous
Vehicles’; the technology intends to modify autonomous cars to reach full automation with the
highest level of accuracy by improving their level of sensitivity in terms of their sensors,
automated controls, more advanced software, improved navigation system, and proper use of
wireless networks.
Stages of the Design Process
Following the engineering design process is not an option for the creators of emerging
technologies. If a device or technology has be effective and useful to the people, its creators
should follow a special design process that includes noting a problem that need solution, doing
the necessary background search, identifying specific requirements, brainstorming and
evaluating available technological solutions, developing a prototype, using the prototype to test
the effectiveness of the device of technology, assessing the efficiency and applicability of the
solution, and communicating the results (Pakuch, Stevens, Boden, & Bossauer, 2018). The
