Military reasons

The Soviet Union resulted to spending more money on the, military because they viewed the Strategic Defense System of Reagan as a threat. This took a toll on the economy which is equivalent to causing own bankruptcy

Political reason

Gorbachev introduced a policy of openness and restricting in a bid to welcome suggestions for rebuilding the ruling system. It led to increased criticism from the public.

Other Reasons

The communist system was failing to implement promises to workers. There was a general intolerance.

The system limited the freedom of Russians to watch western films and radio.  They wanted freedom to view, listen and also have a say in the system.
